GOING FOR THE “GREEN” WAS A BLAST!

Barrel Blast Productions
2nd Annual Green Day Race
TVE Arena – Liberty, TX December 5-6, 2003
By:  Anna Bierman

Since Barrel Blast Productions introduced the Green Day Race to the Southeast Texas area in 2002, many barrel racers have been looking forward to Green Day #2.  In less than a year, this annual event grew from a 1 day - outdoor - 2 class show into a 2 day spectacular with 5 classes held at the Trinity Valley covered Expo facility of Liberty, Texas.  The event was kicked off Friday December 5th with an all Men’s 4D barrel race followed by an Open Poles 4D jackpot.  Motivation filled the icy cold air under the TVE Pavilion as Green Day participants anxiously watched Round 1 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo together.  Saturday, December 6th, began with the Green Horse 4D, Open Poles 4D, and an American West 4D all with added money and tons of Prizes!  Thank you to our 2003 Added Money Sponsors: Quarter Box 3 Performance Tack of Hockley, Texas www.quarterbox3.com ,  Sundowner Trailers of Houston Cheryl New Rep. 888-869-6202, and Hillcrest Ford in Huntsville, Texas www.hillcrestford.com .

The second show’s growth proved worthy as many contestants who normally could not afford the cost or travel of Futurity competitions got the ambience of a Futurity Show situation close to home with little expense.  The Green Horse class was designed for horses, of any age, that have never won barrel racing money a chance to compete in a class of their own.  Because Futurity horses may not compete for money prior to December 1st the Green Day Race is a perfect “Debut” for Futurity prospects, as this event will be held the first weekend of December annually as posted on www.barrelblast.com.

Defending his 2002 Green Horse Champion title was Magnolia, Texas Farrier/Trainer Donald Griffin with a winning 15.086 run on Bravado Chicada a/k/a/ “Cookie-Joe”. Donald won the first title on his mare Sheza Mean Dash who was later purchased by Jo Scarmardo.  Jo liked Donald’s training style and competitive nature so much that she sent “Cookie” to him for a little Barrel Racing 101.  The results are back to back Green Horse Champion wins for Donald Griffin and Jo getting to be the proud owner of two Green Horse Champions of the Annual Green Day Race.

The 2003 Director of Southeast Texas Barrel Racing Association, Linda Jones, was the POLES OPEN 4D riding Aces Paul in 20.346.  Our American West 4D race Champion Title belongs to Traci Baird riding Our Special Magic to a crowd pleasing 14.210.

Like a Pit Crew’s importance to the Race Car Driver so would be the Tractor Arena Crew to Barrel Blast Production’s Anna Bierman, the Producer.  BBP extends great thanks to our Green Day Race “Pit Crew” Mike Berberich, Alan Larkin and Doug Hansen for their speed, agility, and competence that ran the 2003 Green Day Race at 60 an hour on a few sets and 50 an hour in others.  All Workers in the 2003 Green Day Race are highly recognized and appreciated for their contribution to yet another successful BBP event.  In addition BBP 2003 Event Staff members were presented embroidered Jackets sponsored by Hillcrest Ford of Huntsville: Stefanie Aldaco, Tammie Phillips, Donna Park, S&L Farms (Scott & Laurie), Billy Bierman, Terri Hybner, and Cindy Baker.

For a complete list of Green Day Race Sponsors, including Links to some web sites, and ALL Race Results for this show please visit www.barrelblast.com .  In December many Products and Companies, both old and new, are introduced to Spectators and Contestants at the Green Day Race through Prizes and Booth Displays but come May we do things a little differently.  May 21-22, 2004 will be a “blast”….a BARREL BLAST with $6000 added money, 2 WPRA Divisional Tour races, 2 American West 4D races, and a Trade Show of shopping only 2 blocks from the best Ice Creamery in Texas !  For 1 class in 1 day our contestant totals are blasting forward from 2001’s 336 entries to 2003’s 519 entries, and we plan to see even more in 2004 with well over 2,000 spectators. BLASTING OFF TO A GREAT START

1st ANNUAL GREEN DAY BARREL RACE

SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR

BARREL BLAST PRODUCTIONS

                                                                                                                                          by: Anna Bierman

The gateway of Champions was opened for over 200 Barrel Racers on December 1st, 2002 in Magnolia, Texas for Barrel Blast Production’s 1st Annual Green Day Barrel Race.  The event was created to introduce the newly formed barrel race production company that will be hosting four annual events and an advertising web site ( www.barrelblast.com ) servicing the Southeast Texas region.  As early as 7 am, folks were pulling in to sight for a front row spot for what seemed to be the most talked about event the area has seen in years.  For the first time, in a long while, Green barrel horses were given a class of their own to compete for what could be their first winnings of a hopefully long and successful barrel racing career.  Not only were riders able to categorically compete their barrel horses that had never won money before, but also they were given a 4D format with $200 Added for a purse of over $1,200 and 30 Prizes in which to do so.  To add a spark of excitement to the Green 4D class, December 1st marks the date in which Futurity horses are eligible to compete.  Therefore, of the 85 Green horses entered that day there was a variety of competition that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats with expectation.

It was Sheza Mean Dash, ridden by Donald Griffin that captured the Green Championship and winning the Green Trophy Halter given by Cordell Haley, LLP.  Taking home the Green Reserve Champion Hay Bag from Whitehorse Mfg. was Linda Sheperd’s Cowboy.   Other Green Division winners were 2D Magnolia Money Bar and Billy Bierman, 3D Challenger and Kelly McQuerry, and in the 4D Jimmy and June Wheeler.  An Open 4D class was offered with $500 Added and over 30 Prizes that boasted a respectful 159 entries and a purse of over $ 3,600.  The Open Champion was Danielle Calfee riding Lady.  See the results for all the day’s winners below.  Digital Photography Imaging (www.digitalphotographyimaging.com) is the official Barrel Blast Production’s Photographer and the Contestants were extremely pleased to get their action shots within a short period after they ran. BBP promotion photos courtesy of DPI 1-866-770-8952.  See DPI about your photos at the upcoming April 25th Spring Buckle Series Finale and May 10th $5000 Added Barrel Blast!

It was an early Christmas for Contestants as 40 places were awarded Prizes and 20 Contestant Appreciation Prize Drawings were distributed across the two classes.  Thank you to our contributing Sponsors and Vendors such as:  Jeffers Equine, 3M Animal Care Products, Charmayne James, Digital Photo Imaging, Rio Vista, Cowboy Times, Josey Ranch, Whitehorse Mfg, M.R. Boots, Barrel Racers News, Cowboy Magic, Quarter Horse News, Rockin Bar B Equine Therapy, The Silver Shack, Romancing The Ranch, Korie Burger, Mike’s Grocery, Dumas Equine, Fortiflex Buckets, Cowgirl Collectibles, Letts Do Butt Rubs, Billy Van Winkle Wood Crafts, Kim Brandl Excel Communications, The Tack Wagon, Club Car Conroe, and Turner Saddlery.  Added Money Sponsors, we thank:  Griffins Horse Sense and Donald Griffin, Farrier.  Champions Surveying, Muffler King, LaPlant Surveyors, Rockin Bar B Equine Therapy, and Candace Hoke/Circle Star Farms. Special thanks to www.ebarrelracing.com  and www.barrelracers.net for hosting the event details

Healthy Hair Care Products sponsored the Best Groomed Horse contest and the winner was Shiro Caliche Bar owned and shown by Peggy Cronan.  We would also like to mention the ground conditions were the best Magnolia Arena could have possibly made them and that is thanks to Darryl Clay and the Magnolia Community Horse Club as well as the ground consulting by S & L Farms, a member of the BBP 2003 staff!  Special thanks to all the hard workers and volunteers who were dedicated to seeing the success of this show through to the very last runner.  In every aspect of assistance we thank the Parking Guides, Check-In and Awards Secretaries, Announcers & Timekeepers, Computer Secretaries, Gate and Barrel Workers, Tractor Drivers, Vendors, Concession, and even the Best Groomed Horse Judges.

We look forward to the 2nd Annual Green Day Barrel Race on December 5th-6th, 2003 as we plan to continue the Green horse class and concept by carrying it a step further.  In 2003 we will proudly add a BFA Futurity class thus turning this success into a 2-day spectacular.  Stay tuned to www.barrelblast.com  and we hope to see you at the 2003 Spring Buckle Series, May 9-10 Summer $5000 Added Barrel Blast, and the Fall Barrel Clinic with a possible WPRA Divisional Tour barrel race!
