(Lancaster, PA) – Do you love horses? Horse figurines? Horse paintings? Horse stories? TV shows about horses? Talking about horses? That’s exactly what Author\/Artist Ron Hevener will be doing during his upcoming tour of public libraries in Pennsylvania next month: Talking horses.<\/p>\n
Currently, Mr. Hevener is filming the TV documentary for his novel, “Fate of the Stallion!” The family story, about an Arabian racehorse named “Nahgua,” took place in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country and over the years caught the imagination of horse lovers everywhere. When the original Nahgua died at age 23 last year, the press called him “One of Lancaster County’s most celebrated residents.”<\/p>\n
Hevener remembers the moment. “I was out of town making plans for the documentary when I got the news,” he says. “We were set to start filming and I couldn’t believe it was happening. I guess I thought Nahgua would live forever.”<\/p>\n
With the film, Nahgua just might do that. But, finding the right horse to portray the famous stallion was no easy task. “He had to be an Arabian, he had to be the color bay, and he had to be special,” the author says. “He had to have a star on his forehead, like Nahgua did, and, most of all, he had to love people.”<\/p>\n
That special stallion was found at the U.S. Arabian National Horse Show in Kentucky. As Hevener studied some of the best young horses in the country, one of them stood calmly before the crowd. He was the color of Nahgua, with the mark of the star on his forehead, and it was clear that he was a crowd-pleaser. Hevener had made a rare find: a 16- Hand tall Arabian stallion, named Selket Louchiano.<\/p>\n
“Louchiano was everything I imagined about Nahgua when I wrote the story,” says Hevener, who made his name as an artist by selling his original paintings, clay figurines and telling stories to tourists at Lancaster County farmers’ markets. “I had worked hard over the years and my career as an artist and writer had grown. This time, I was finding a horse at a national horse show instead of finding him at a country auction. I loved Louchiano right away. He was beautiful and powerful. Exactly the right horse for the film.”<\/p>\n
But, the stallion was set to compete at an important show in Scottsdale, Arizona. “We couldn’t risk losing him,” says Hevener. “He had to go into training for the film right away.” Louchiano is currently in training at a stable in Christiana, PA.<\/p>\n
Asked when the public can see Louchiano for themselves, Hevener says, “We’re filming him at the East Coast Arabian Championships in August.” Nahgua was originally stabled in one of their barns and the riding club is featured in the novel. The show is held yearly at the historic Quentin Riding Club, several miles north of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, near Lebanon.<\/p>\n
