The article\u00a0came in the wake of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehorse.com\/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=10439\">Sept. 21 closure<\/a> of Cavel International of DeKalb, Ill., the last U.S. horse slaughter facility.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/mnreports\/AL_LS635.txt\" target=\"_blank\"><em>USDA Market News<\/em> Oct. 4 report<\/a>, 31,086 horses declared as animals intended for slaughter have been exported to Mexico so far this year.
