{"id":1513,"date":"2008-07-09T00:50:50","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T17:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2008-07-09T00:50:50","modified_gmt":"2008-07-08T17:50:50","slug":"fda-issues-safety-warning-on-comfortis-ivermectin-interaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/industry\/fda-issues-safety-warning-on-comfortis-ivermectin-interaction\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA issues safety warning on Comfortis-ivermectin interaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Veterinarians who use high, extralabel doses of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivermectin\">ivermectin<\/a> to treat dogs with nonresponsive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marvistavet.com\/html\/demodectic_mange.html\">demodectic mange<\/a> and other conditions should be aware that the Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s Center for Veterinary Medicine has received reports of some dogs developing signs of ivermectin toxicosis when ivermectin is used concurrently with Comfortis (spinosad).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The clinical signs of these adverse reactions are consistent with ivermectin toxicosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, manufactures Comfortis. The drug is a monthly oral, chewable tablet for the prevention and treatment of flea infestations on dogs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The FDA and Elanco Animal Health are advising veterinarians that dogs receiving extralabel doses of ivermectin should not receive concurrent treatment with Comfortis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eli Lilly has issued a Companion Animal Health Technical Bulletin on &#8220;Spinosad and the Extra-Label Use of High Dose Ivermectin for the Treatment of Generalized Demodicosis in Dogs&#8221; at <a href=\"http:\/\/elms.xh1.lilly.com\/10788_03_tech_Bulletin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/elms.xh1.lilly.com\/10788_03_tech_Bulletin.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veterinarians who use high, extralabel doses of ivermectin to treat dogs with nonresponsive demodectic mange and other conditions should be aware that the Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s Center for Veterinary Medicine has received reports of some dogs developing signs of ivermectin toxicosis when ivermectin is used concurrently with Comfortis (spinosad).
