{"id":2056,"date":"2009-03-11T20:29:51","date_gmt":"2009-03-11T13:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2009-03-11T20:29:51","modified_gmt":"2009-03-11T13:29:51","slug":"jim-helzer-is-elected-president-of-aqha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/industry\/jim-helzer-is-elected-president-of-aqha\/","title":{"rendered":"JIM HELZER IS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF AQHA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><em>America<\/em><em>\u2019s Horse, March 10, 2009 \u2013<\/em> At the 2009 American Quarter Horse Association Annual Convention this week in\u00a0San Antonio, <\/span><span class=\"normal1\"><span>Jim Helzer ofArlington,\u00a0Texas, was elected the 59th president of the world\u2019s largest equine breed registry.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span>Helzer is CEO and President of JEH Stallion Station and other JEH companies. JEH Stallion Station is a commercial horse breeding\u00a0operation and the other companies are real estate and investment businesses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">With his wife, Marilyn, Helzer established JEH Stallion Station in 1994, and it has become one of the leading equine facilities in the Southwest, with locations in\u00a0Texas\u00a0and\u00a0New Mexico. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">Born in\u00a0Loveland,\u00a0Colorado, Helzer began racing American Quarter Horses in\u00a0Colorado\u00a0in his home state in 1962. Since then, the Helzers have successfully raced Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds throughout the\u00a0United States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">The most noteworthy Quarter Horse campaigned by the Helzers was Refrigerator, the sport&#8217;s world champion in 1992 and \u201993. The winner of the 1990 All American Futurity after the Helzers supplemented him to the race for $50,000, Refrigerator is currently Quarter Horse racing&#8217;s leading all-time money earner at $2,126,309. He is the only three-time winner of the Champion of Champions, the sport\u2019s richest and most prestigious race for older horses. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">I want to be known as the members&#8217; man,\u201d Helzer said.\u00a0\u201cWe want to make sure that the members obtain a sound return on their membership investment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">He also believes that AQHA must operate with a balanced budget.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u201cThe erratic\u00a0behavior of the\u00a0economy will test our management skills in 2009 and beyond,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u201cWe must maximize our returns while minimizing our risks\u00a0with the Association\u2019s monies. We will make our membership more cognizant of\u00a0the value of our corporate partners and to utilize their products and offers as a top priority.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The rest of Helzer\u2019s to-do list includes further refinement of AQHA\u2019s registration process; a full-scale redesign of AQHA\u2019s information technology systems; some changes in the Bank of America Racing Challenge Championship and enhancing Championship\u00a0day; a change in western pleasure classes to better portray the athleticism of the Quarter Horse relative to form vs. function; changes in AQHA\u2019s convention format; inspire AQHA members to submit ideas relative to classes and\/or programs that will benefit the entire organization; and ensure that the transparency of\u00a0our organization is available and understandable to our entire membership.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">Helzer has been an AQHA director and chairman of the AQHA Racing Council. He also is a member and past president of the Texas Quarter Horse Association, and a member and past director of the Texas Thoroughbred Association. Currently, Helzer also serves on the board of the Texas Horsemen\u2019s Benevolent and Protective Association as its president and as a member of the Texas Horsemen\u2019s Partnership management committee.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"normal1\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">AQHA news and information is a service of AQHA publications.
