{"id":3570,"date":"2010-07-15T22:54:37","date_gmt":"2010-07-15T15:54:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/?p=3570"},"modified":"2010-07-15T22:54:37","modified_gmt":"2010-07-15T15:54:37","slug":"horse-racing-nyra-shoring-drug-policies-eliminates-security-barn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/industry\/horse-racing-nyra-shoring-drug-policies-eliminates-security-barn\/","title":{"rendered":"Horse racing: NYRA shoring drug policies, eliminates security barn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\">By NICOLE RUSSO<br \/>\nThe Saratogian<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">BELMONT \u2014 In a cost-cutting move that\u2019s also popular with horsemen, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) is eliminating its race-day security barn, beginning with opening day at Saratoga Race Course next week, and will instead implement other methods aimed at preventing the illegal usage of performance enhancing drugs, with harsh penalties for violators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe horsemen are, to be honest with you, thrilled that they\u2019re moving toward a more scientific protocol and away from the security barn, which oftentimes was very stressful and even dangerous to the horses and the people working with them,\u201d said trainer Rick Violette, president of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen\u2019s Association and a NYRA board member<\/p>\n<p>The race-day security barn has been in operation at NYRA tracks \u2014 Saratoga, Belmont and Aqueduct \u2014 since May 2005. Horses are required to be moved from their trainer\u2019s barn and report to this separate barn for monitoring six hours prior to post time for the race they are entered in. During this time period, only the trainer and his or her employees may enter the horse\u2019s stall.
