APHA requires genetic\u00a0parentage testing for all breeding stallions, racehorses, foals produced by\u00a0certain breeding methods and\u00a0horses with certain registration situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAPHA\u2019s affiliation with UC Davis is an exciting move for us,\u201d said\u00a0Lex Smurthwaite, Executive Director of the American Paint Horse Association.\u00a0\u201cWe will now\u00a0be able to offer members a wide range of testing to improve\u00a0breeding chances for specific colors and to avoid potential diseases. Our APHA\u00a0members have\u00a0asked for this and we made it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to the parentage verification test currently offered, UC\u00a0Davis will also\u00a0provide APHA\u00a0members with two optional packages to test for color genes\u00a0and diseases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the optional packages is the comprehensive coat color\u00a0package. This package will test for 11 color genes including tobiano, sabino,\u00a0lethal white and\u00a0others. Paint Horses are unique from most other breeds because\u00a0of their spotted coat patterns. Their base coats are the same colors as those\u00a0of other breeds,\u00a0but superimposed over these colors are a variety of white\u00a0spotting patterns. The ability to recognize these patterns and understand the\u00a0genetics behind them\u00a0is essential for Paint Horse breeders to increase the\u00a0proportion of spotted horses in foal crops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The other optional package is the complete disease diagnostic\u00a0package.
