The championship focuses on authentic ranch work events\u2014ranch work, ranch roping, ranch cow work and ranch cutting\u2014to spotlight horses with the skills to be valuable assets on the job; read on for class descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>A 3D Divisional Payout\u2014where each D pays equally\u2014offers increased payout opportunities for all skill levels. Each division also includes a $600 high-point champion and $400 reserve champion award bonus. Additionally, the high-scoring Paint Horse in each event will receive special awards.<\/p>\n<p>The pre-entry deadline for the Ranch Work Championship is 5p.m. June 29. The horse\/ rider team is judged on the correctness, efficiency and pattern accuracy with which the obstacles are negotiated and the attitude and mannerisms exhibited by the horse. Judging emphasis is on identifying the well-broke, responsive and well-mannered\u00a0horse\u00a0which\u00a0can\u00a0correctly\u00a0navigate\u00a0and\u00a0negotiate\u00a0the\u00a0pattern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RANCH ROPING\u2014$1,750 added<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this event is to show the horse\u2019s ability to assist the rider in roping a cow out of a herd, as would be done on a ranch for branding or doctoring. The horse and rider should move quietly through the herd, to locate the desired cow and position the\u00a0rider\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0the\u00a0catch quietly\u00a0with\u00a0as\u00a0little\u00a0disturbance\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0herd\u00a0as\u00a0possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RANCH COW WORK\u2014$1,750 added<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ideal ranch horse should also be a cow horse and this event demonstrates and measures the\u00a0horse\u2019s\u00a0ability to do cow work. There are five parts to this work: boxing the cow; setting up the cow and driving it down the fence to the opposite end of the arena; boxing it at the opposite end\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0arena\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0driving\u00a0the\u00a0cow\u00a0past\u00a0the\u00a0middle\u00a0marker\u00a0again,\u00a0then\u00a0circling or\u00a0roping.\u00a0There\u00a0is\u00a0no\u00a0expectation\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0exhibitor\u00a0will\u00a0make\u00a0a\u201cfence\u00a0turn\u201d,\u00a0rather\u00a0the boxing, driving, boxing, driving, roping or\u00a0circling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RANCH CUTTING\u2014$1,750 added\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This class is judged on the ability of the horse to work a cow by separating it from the herd and holding it to demonstrate the\u00a0horse\u2019s\u00a0ability to work the\u00a0cow.<\/p>\n<p>##<\/p>\n<p><em>[Reprinting all of part of this story is permitted, so long as credit is given to\u00a0<\/em>the Paint Horse Journal<em>\u00a0and a link provide back to\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/apha.com\/\">apha.com<\/a><em>.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>About APHA<\/strong><br \/>\nThe American Paint Horse Association is the world\u2019s second-largest international equine breed association, registering more than a million horses in 59 nations and territories since it was founded in 1962.
