Box l2966 \u00a0Austin, Texas 78711 \u00a0(800) 550-8242 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tahc.texas.gov\">www.tahc.texas.gov<\/a><br \/>\nFor more information contact the Public Information Dept. at 512-719-0750 or at <a href=\"mailto:public_info@tahc.texas.gov\">public_info@tahc.texas.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUSTIN<\/strong> \u2013 Since the last vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) update on Friday, July 19, 2019, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has received reports of 11 new confirmed cases of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas VSV confirmations since July 19, 2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li>2 new VSV-infected equine premises have been confirmed in Bastrop County<\/li>\n<li>1 new VSV-infected equine premises has been confirmed in Brown County<\/li>\n<li>2 new VSV-infected equine premises have been confirmed in Travis County<\/li>\n<li>1 new VSV-infected equine premises has been confirmed in Hood County<\/li>\n<li>2 new VSV-infected equine premises have been confirmed in Palo Pinto County<\/li>\n<li>2 new VSV-infected equine premises have been confirmed in Somervell County<\/li>\n<li>1 new VSV-infected equine premises has been confirmed in Shackelford County<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TexasTAHC2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9096 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TexasTAHC2-294x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TexasTAHC2-294x300.png 294w, https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TexasTAHC2-300x306.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ebarrelracing.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/TexasTAHC2.png 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The newly confirmed premises are under quarantine by the TAHC. Affected horses will be monitored by regulatory and authorized veterinarians until premises are eligible for quarantine release 14 days after clinical VSV signs are observed. \u00ad\u00ad<\/p>\n<p>To date, 31 premises in 16 Texas counties have been confirmed with VSV. Of the 31 premises, 3 have been released. Outbreaks usually occur during the warmer months, often along waterways.<br \/>\nVSV normally has an incubation period of 2-8 days before the infected animal develops blisters that swell and burst, leaving painful sores. The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or by blood-feeding insects.<br \/>\nIf VSV is confirmed, infected animals are quarantined for 14 days after clinical signs of lesions are observed. This short-term quarantine helps prevent the movement of animals and the spread of the disease to other premises, fairs or markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Veterinarians Need to Know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you suspect your client\u2019s animal has VSV, contact your TAHC Region Office for paperwork, procedures, and important sample submission information.<br \/>\nSeveral states are imposing enhanced entry requirements on Texas livestock due to the VSV cases. However, these tips may help protect livestock:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Control biting flies<\/strong><br \/>\nKeep equine animals stalled or under a roof at night to reduce exposure to flies<br \/>\nKeep stalls clean<br \/>\nFeed and water stock from their individual buckets<br \/>\nDon\u2019t visit a ranch that\u2019s under quarantine for VSV.
