Kayla my friend - your plate has been so full this last few days especially with your mom and Woody both being in the hospital. We've talked about how much the Lord keeps letting get heaped upon you. Know that God is good and wonderful and what a glorious place your mom is now. No pain no suffering and she is walking the streets of gold with your dad! Know that you have friends that care and just keep your faith, your head looking up and God will take care of ALL YOUR NEEDS. Don't worry - HE KNOWS!!! My prayers are on you!!1

I have known Mrs. Ella Langford since I was about 12 years old...she was one tough lady on the outside but sweet as could be on the inside. She would never hesitate to lend a hand if you needed her for something. She kept Kayla in line for many a year. I know Ms Ella had many health issues over the last several years and just did not feel good anymore. She is up in Heaven with Mr. Langford and they are happy and healthy again.
We know this will be very hard for you Kayla but if you need anything our Family is here. (+)

Kayla, you and your Mom have been a part of mine and my kids life for a very long and am I so sorry for this time in your life when a parent passes on, she was hoot and one tough lady. I still remember so many stories but one sticks in my mind the most when Shelley had gotten stepped on by that dang grey mare of Susie's and we had our hands full with all that was happening in the trailer and Shelley just a screaming at the top of her lungs about her heel and I was hollering at her to go to the wash rack and hydro her foot and get quiet! Your Mom, as always trying to help could see the tension and quietly ask me if she could give Shelley a tylenol! She was so sweet and at that point whatever your Mom could have given Shell to hush her up was fine with me.
You know what, your Mom is sitting in heaven right now with your Dad and your Aunt Margaret just chatting it up. She is finally getting to catch up on old times with all of the loved ones that went before her.
BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURNS FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED. Matthew 5:4

I can not express the gratitude for all the calls, emails and text messages I have gotten since Momma passed away... She had been soooo sick for so long and I know, I really believe she is in a better place now... I was with her yesterday afternoon at the hospital when it happened.. I knew immediately she was gone, they tried to revive her but the aortic aneurysm apparently ruptured and there was nothing anyone could do. I lost my daddy in 01' with alzheimer's and he had been in bad shape for several years... when he passed away I hoped Mom would have a life again, able to travel and go places but her health started getting worse soon after..... Yes, anyone who knew us knew we fought like cats and dogs... but I would have... and did fight Satan everyday for the last 11 years to keep her here... I came home years ago to help with them due to the health problems they both had... having put my whole life on hold to be here for her and now I don't know what to do... She was a tough ole bird and I'm sure that is what kept her here as long as it did.. she would have been 83 in July... But she did love the horses and was my biggest supporter of the barrel races... Her old mare is still alive and kicking at 26, I have raised many and Mom would always claim the prettiest ones!!
One of the many stories I was told by her touches my heart..... when she was a young girl living outside of Marquez Tx in the 30's or 40's a couple stopped by the old home place because their car had overheated... they need water for the radiator so Mom and her older sister walked up the hill to the well and got a bucket full... when they got back the couple put water in their car and had some cool water on the porch... for payment they offered mom and her sister (Aunt Lucille) some sea shells... that had come from the coast... of course mom had never seen sea shells and was thrilled!! ( the shells are still, here belive it or not!)
before the couple left they introduced theirselves to her parents... it was Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker... ring any bells?
She was truley an amazing person and I am blessed to have been the child she chose.... The days are going to be long and hard.. I hope I am up to the challange that God has put before me..
The funeral will be in Leon County (her home place) outside of Marquez Tx.. The services will be held at the Seale-Round Prairie Community Center @ 2:00 on Saturday May 31, 2008 The graveside will be shorty after next door and the Seale-Round Prairie Cemetary. Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett Tx will be handling the services... Thanks once again for your prayers and please, please don't let be fall off the face of the earth grieving over her loss... Hope to see everyone once again in the near future at a barrel race.. Kayla

Many prayers and thoughts coming your way. I lost my dad this past October at the age of 81. He had been battling Emphazema (sp). It was hard to watch him suffer and harder to let him go. Your mom, like my dad is in a better place and pain free looking down on us with a smile. Hang in there thru good days and bad, the memories are always there to warm your heart and put a smile on your face.

Donna and my prayers are with you. Losing a mother is so hard no matter what their age. But as other have said, she is now in a much better place than us with no pain and looking down on you at this monument. Just look at it as a vacation she is on till you get there one day. I still to this day think about both my parents, dad in 2001 and mom in 2005. There will be some tough times but you can make it through them all. All you have to do is ask the good LORD upstairs.

Kayla, I am so sorry for your loss, and JoEllan and Reggie said, they are looking down on us now, with no pain, no sorrow, I know words can't express enough, and this is one of the hardest challenges I have ever had in my life, but with my faith and taking one day at a time, it does get a little easier, so if you EVER need to talk, pick up the phone, you have my number.

Take everything one day at a time. I lost Dad almost 17 years ago (wow) after a lengthy illness and think about him everyday. It was very tough for several months and then one day the sun started shining and all the memories were good ones. My saving grace was that I know my rancher Dad was no longer in pain.....It gave me much peace.
Please tell all the OLD gang I said hello!

Please Lord give me some guidance and some wisdom here.. I am a lost lamb in need of some help... I have put my mom into your care now and will miss her for the rest of my life.... I just spoke to the vet that is taking care of my stallion 'Woody'... they cannot get the blood clots out... with out surgery, they may have to do a partial amputation if opening the wound doesnt work... if they amputate they will also geld him at the same time to save his life. My old red heeler 'Bandit' is in such bad shape I am going to have to put him to sleep.. I have been dreading the day I would loose him he has been my faithful companion for 18 years now.. and to have to do this... at this time now... is past breaking my heart... Lord help me! I can take no more!

Me and Mom went by and saw Kayla today. She was up beat, given the situation. She was recalling old stories, enjoyed to hear them. Her Mom was a pistol, never a dull moment to give an @$$ chewen if someone needed one and if you needed a hand she would be there to give both of hers.

Oh Kayla! I'm so sorry! I'm a bit behind on the board these past few days so I'm sorry my prayers and concerns are late in getting to you. Don't try to "shut off" the good memories, I promise, they will help get you through the rough times. Also, just remember that she'll always be with you now. I lost my dad in '03 and I see things daily that remind me of his presence. God will provide you with the strength you need, I promise. At your lowest moment, he'll pick you up and help you move on. Please don't hesitate to call if you need anything at all!

Time just feels like its standing still........ I get up to do something and just cant..... My "Woody" is not getting any better, they did surgery on his you-know-what to get the blood out.. its full of clots.. while they were cleaning it this morning he reared up and flipped in the stall and laid there kicking.. the tech ran got the vet ... he got up and seemed ok... she doesn't know what to make of that Nero incident unless it was truly from pain... Aunt B.... (God has blessed me with another Angel in her) has been going by and feeding him cookies and she is telling him how much his momma misses him.. she was taking the Laser back to laser him to try ANYTHING to help save his life at this point...
I will be leaving on Thursday heading to Marquez to finalize the arrangements and for the funeral on Saturday.... Mother liked to sleep until around 2pm everyday so that's what time the service will be.. I didn't want to interrupt her schedule in Heaven.....

Just got off the phone with the vet at Waller Equine.... Woody is not doing well at all.. he has lost a tremendous amount of blood his respiratory and heart rate are elevated... I told them to not take heroic measures... I can not do plasma on him at $250 a bag and he may need 5 or 6..... If they have to put him to sleep I am ok with that.... Shelley is coming to take Bandit tomorrow to put him to sleep for me... I CAN NOT DO IT she will bring him home and bury him in his back yard for me... I tell you life can not get any worse than loosing your mother, your horse and your dog in the span of 4 days

My goodness Kayla, you are going thru it! And I do meant thru it, meaning you will get past it. Such terrible things and to be happening all at once. God must know that you are strong enough to deal with it.
Lots of people are praying for you, hang in there, tiny, tiny steps they may be, but you will get thru.

Kayla, you have a heavy load, but you will make it. Life is not always barrel racing, parties, and laughter, but at least we have friends to help us through these difficult times. Know you have these kind of friends. We share your pain, share your sadness, and will share your regained good times to come. This sad time will eventually pass, so stay strong and remember we experience trials in our lives to keep us faithful, humble and depending on the Lord.

Well I guess Momma needed a good watch dog in Heaven...... Got home this evening and Ole Bandit my faithful traveling companion for over a million miles was gone.. he was 18 years old... He was at the back door where he always was so I couldn't slip out past him with out him knowing... He is buried next to his daughter Reba and all the other loved pets that have gone before him over the years...

If anyone is interested in sending flowers - please note that in lieu of flowers make a contribution to offset the costs of Ms Ella funeral. Checks or money orders can be made payable to Bower Funeral Home, PO Box Jewett, Texas 75860. The funeral home does not take paypal or credit cards... I already tried but said they would take checks and money orders. Kayla has sure been there for alot of people over the years to give a ride, help with your horse, give advice whether you wanted it or not...lol, so let's step up for her!

Thanks guys! I have been to the Funeral home and all the arrangements are made.. After this is all over I will try to thank each and everyone of you personally!! I have sure seen the good come out in people this week.. Everyone that has called and offered ANY kind of help THANKS!! All I can answer at this point is I DONT KNOW what I may need...As of 1 pm, Woody was still here.. the vet is not wanting to just quit.. (works for me) they said he if takes a turn or get worse they would put him down.. Aunt B said she has a spot picked out and ready if it comes to that.. I am hoping its like going to look at a new horse.. IF you take a trailer you never buy what you went to see... But she is ready if need be... For those that have my cell # it wont work up here... but you can leave a message and when I get to service I will call you back... LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!

In the mist of all this heartbreaking week.... There has been a little glimer of hope.... Woody is still fighting! The vet at Waller said if he isn't going to give up, she isn't either!!! Aunt B should have a new vet product on the market in the near future!! (its a Woody sling) And the GOOD NEWS I got this morning is BOTH of my mares are in foal to him! Now somehow I have to manage to keep them in foal and able to feed them until they have the babies.. Becuase there will be NO MORE Woody's... This week so far has almost been a dream, and a bad one at that.. but tomorrow will be the tell... If I can get through it I know that God will have GREAT plans in store for me..

Well.... its over... the service was very, very nice.. my cousin from Arkansas was the minister, I was able to get in touch with Pam Buck..(anyone ever heard her sing? bring tears to your eyes.. she is touched by the hand of God) The family was able to bring LOTS of pictures of Mom from when she was a teenager up until last summer.. Lots of my friends came from Houston... I held it together until the grave side service... Came back to my cousins home in Marquez to gather and eat.... then the phone rings and its the vet from Waller.... Woody didn't make it.... Of course it didn't surprise me really, I knew he was in horrible shape... she wasn't sure if he didn't throw a blood clot or something... The one good thing about today... IF there was a good one.... I had a distant cousin that I have not seen 30 years.. We were best friends, dancing partners on Saturday night and buds!!! I was so glad to get to see him again... I know I emailed you before and you know I'm praying for you to have the strength to get through all of this sh---crap but I wanted to post on here too... I know that it's alot easier for me to say, being 7mo pregnant and some 1200 miles away from the most of y'all, and you're right, I don't really know you, but what I do know about you is that you're always there for everybody else when they need someone/something, so I'm putting it out to all you guys down there in Texas to maybe get together and have someone hold a benefit barrel race (or something, BBQ?? or ???), to help you get some $ together for everything from final expenses for your Mom and now this not-so-insignificant-I'm-sure vet bill you're going to have to have. So what does everyone down there say? I know y'all are almost all friends off the computer so I'm sure there's someone out there who's got the capabilities and wherewithall to maybe get something going for Kayla. Wish I could do more from afar but all I can do is suggest this....

Kayla....I just read your last post...and my heart is broken....it hit me like a ton of rocks....I don't know if I could be as strong as you have been...I don't know what I would do without my mom....I better get down on my knees to night and thank the Lord above I still have her with me....again my prayers are with you...keep your chin up...you have a lot of friends that love you....

There's No Place Like Home!! Just got home this evening... this house sure seems bigger than it did 2 weeks ago... I walked in and sat down and cried..... Mom's poor little dog has been every step with me this weekend... I had the service in an OLD schoolhouse near where Mom was born and was raised.. Took Twister (mom's dog) in with me... he doesn't understand cars and traffic... he isn't street wise he was Mom's house dog... I was carrying him up to the casket.. He jumped out of my arms onto her... smelling and licking her he knew that was his mommie... THAT BROKE MY HEART ALL OVER AGAIN since that he will not let me out of his sight... Thanks to everyone for their kind words and phone calls... I have so much to do now, I dont know where to start tomorrow.....But like my cousin who did the service said.... he told me I was the strongest person he had ever seen in his life to be able to go through this without a meltdown (yeah just wait) and God will not put on me more than I can handle, and God must have some HUGE blessings coming my way.. Ok I'm ready Please

With as many people as Kayla has helped throughout her lifetime, whether it be loaning her horses or organizing a benefit for the Humphreys... I am surprised no one has stepped up to the plate. That disappoints me, but shouldn't surprise me I guess. :no: I am still very new to the barrel racing world so I don't know a whole lot of people, but I know there are a lot of people out there who Kayla has unselfishly helped in the past.. where are you now that she needs YOU?

you can count us in. i have been in contact w/kayla and have offered ANY kind of assistance that she may need. her help for jasmine's benefit has not been over looked or unappreciated as she knows this. we also helped out with her benefit for jackson's vet bill a couple of months ago. we could possible get something together for the gulf coast this weekend, maybe a bake sale and silent auction. let me know what yall think.

She has helped us more than once so even if a benefit has already been done for something else - she still is in need and I for one want to help her. If you guys will let us do something at a Gulf Coast - I will bring jewelry - purses - bling bling - decor etc.. all for Kayla's benefit. Just let me know when and where and I'll bring everything.
Kayla - you know how I feel about Woody and I am so sorry that you had so much laid on you at once. I do know that God has a plan and a reason for life's journey and the people he places in our lifes along that journey. I am blessed to have been the one God placed here for you and Woody for this part of your journey and know that you can come anytime and visit Woody under the shade tree. We can share a cookie with him and know he was the champion you made him and went on to be.

Ok guys need your opinion.... last wed when the vet called and said Woody was in really bad shape, I told her to put him down... she called back and said she wasn't ready to give up on him...????? Ok, the bill on Thursday was around $800.... Ok, great like I'm made of money this week.... I told them NO HEROIC MEASURES!! If he took a turn for the worse.. Put him down....if he had anymore of the seizures put him down... she told me she was just going to monitor him ... maybe some antibiotics maybe pain meds.. ok... when the other vet called on Saturday a hour after Moms funeral and told me they lost him... he died, they didn't put him down... today I call to see what the damages were......... $1500...........they didn't bury him Aunt B came and got him Saturday night... My question is.... How is monitoring him for 3 days costing $700? I said no heroic measures and the vet (different one from thursday) told me saturday he started acting colicky so she tubed him and gave pain meds and treated him for a colic..... is my mind just in a crooked place due to this week? that sounds heroic to me? I just don't think thats right... but my thinking process is not clear this week.. I was not ready to start an argument with them today.. I asked Aunt B to go talk to the original vet because she has been the one speaking to her twice a day or more since Woody had been there... Am I in left field on this?

JJ it's just my opinion but it sounds like they screwed up....the minute he started to act colicky or taking a turn for the worse they already had your orders and that was no heroic measures......treating for colic in my book constitues heroic measures. I think I'd give it a few days and then go in and talk to the vet that treated him or whomever is the lead/owner of the vet clinic. You should be able to get them to reduce this bill and if not, set it up on payments and pay $10 a month. Can't do anything to you if you pay each month.

How long was Woody actually at the clinic???? Sometimes I think when you call and ask...where abouts is my bill $$$ at this time...they give you an approximate amount...or this is what always seems to happen to me...and I know you told them no Heroic Measures....but to them that does not seem heroic....if it was only a few main meds and a tubing....don't get mad at me...

Well, If I were you, I would at least talk to the main vet and ask for a break down of all the charges that incurred while Woody was there. And then maybe you can work out a payment arrangement that will work for both of you....or like above you can pay the $10.00 per month till paid off..(that will take awhile)...and then what happens if you need his office again or word gets out your not paying in a timely matter to the other vet offices....not wanting to step on anyones toes or get anyone mad at me...but you have to see their side also....

Well I spoke to the vet clinic today... they couldn't understand the confusion about the bill.... but they did talk to the owner/vet of the clinic and he waived his original fee's from Saturday, Sunday of $278.. well that helps a little...so instead of $1500 its only $1200..... I am usually quick to ask how much stuff costs but somehow this slipped through the cracks or at least some mis comunication... minimal care was $125 per day... thank goodness it wasnt critical care...
And yes Sally that worried me also... what if I need a vet trip with another horse.. you know how these guys can be.. you try to keep them safe and well but you never know.....

Kayla, I was not trying to make anyone mad at me...and again my prayers are with you, and I am glad that they reduced your bill. I know how these horses are trying to find a way to get hurt...last week my yearling punctured the side of his mouth through and through so rushed him to the vet for stitches....vet did a wonderful job sewing inside and out...only to go out a few days later to see the little ----- rubbed all the outer stitches out...so now he just has to heal...then to day I go out..and his left front knee is swollen up the whole inside of the upper leg....he stuck it somewhere he should not have and puncture wound in it above the knee on the inside...glad it is only just a small one just looks worse than it is..... my mom always tell me they are just looking for a place to get hurt..no matter how safe we try and keep them....

Just speaking from a recent experience with a horse that I had to put down due to colic (rare form that caused organs to shut down) I know that everytime the vet hangs a bag of fluids it is 200 dollars. Not sure if Woody was on them but guessing he most likely was. Also I know I spent several days checking the bill before he made aturn for the worse and the figure that they gave me was from 24 hours before. They are constantly hanging fluids and meds so they don't figure until that night. I spent 2500 and had to put him down. I understand! I was also fortunate enough to have a honest vet who straight up told me he is never going to get any better only worse as soon as he relapsed.I think that should be a requirement. Sorry for your loss and we will continue to pray for you. Hang in there!

No Woody never had any fluids or plasma or anything.... I belive they were giving him some pain meds and maybe some antibiotics but not sure of that... IF, IF someone had told me an injury like this is could be life threatning I may would have done this diffrently.. I was under the impression (my fault) that he would stay over the holiday weekend and then I could take over his care at home on monday... was lead to believe this was not a big deal... but of course with my luck this week... NOT!! I am quick to question the amount of vet bills due to the high cost of everything these days.... I am likely at fault here because my mind was not thinking clearly... I am just sick he had to suffer, and by the sounds of what his stall looked like there he did suffer... maybe the last vet was just not notified if he took a turn for the worse (which I would think colicy would be a turn) to put him down... Somehow I will get through this bump, well speed bump..... heck this could be a trench in the road...

Kayla, just my 2 cents, but it sounds like they are at fault here. If his stall looked like you say, then what measures were they taking. He could have done the same thing at your home. I had a filly that coliced one Sat night at 11, the vet came out and immediately asked about surgery, I said, no. She gave her some pain meds, oiled her and left. The next morning she took a bad turn, so I hauled her to the office. They began administering fluid and more pain meds, and told me to go home and rest. About 30 minutes later, they called and said she took a turn for the worse. My dad just arrived back home and went and got her. She lived. They wanted to put her down, and I am sure glad he brought her home. Sometimes, I think vets get caught in a no win situation and really don't know what to do. I would stand firm on my statement of what I asked for and take someone (maybe Aunt B) with you to try and have the fees further reduced.

No one is bad mouthing a vet in particular.... this whole thing was a miscommunication on everyones part...there are lots of good vets out there... this clinic included..and there are lots of BAD vets out there... that is why we choose what vet we use... this clinic is a good one with several top notch vets on the payroll.... but we as consumers need to be aware of charges and not go blindly into care or treatment because you WILL get an expensive surprise when its all over.... I got the bill today and there are several charges for treatment that I have a hard time understanding why they would have used these drugs and I will call tomorrow and question

Yup, it can be very expensive when one gets sick. When Brim died I used the local vet and we didn't do anything elaborate and it was $ 230 the first day and then $1200 the next including the autopsy that we had to perform because of the insurance. Thank god I had and have insurance cause if one gets sick you know the bill will be paid..................I was able to get another horse too and not come up with any money.
