Post by: Shelley Millis on March 30, 2009, 10:38:25 AM: It is a good sized arena with a big warm up area behind the arena, we will have a paneled alleyway feeding into the warm up area.
There are several covered warm up areas too. We will have two 4x4 tractors with Reveal 4 N 1 drags keeping the ground in tip top shape.

Post by: Shelley Millis on March 30, 2009, 10:43:28 AM: We have had mail in entries coming in already....seems to be lots of folks excited about this years show...we are looking forward to it and appreciate all of the positive feedback. The folks that work at Katy are very friendly and are also looking forward to having the barrel racers at their facility. It would be so nice if there could be more barrel racing events at the GSWEC, but the owners have it set up cost wise where it really has to be rented for a weekend type of event, not a one day type of barrel race. Very nice facilty with lots of near by beneficial resources!

Post by: themurphy6 on March 30, 2009, 11:46:28 AM: We have run there several times. It's a good pen with good dirt, although it is outdoors, everything is covered and like Waco, you will be able to go from your stall to warm up arena to competition pen all under cover so no worries about rain.

I went to double check & I do not see different amounts listed, I think maybe you are looking at the added money breakdown for each day. This is a show that will have different classes that span over 4 days, the TOTAL ADDED MONEY FOR THE EVENT IS $10,000. The amounts that are listed next to the class each day is the added money in that class for that specific day, but still a total of AT LEAST $10,000....more if I get more sponsors!
We will give buckles for the Open Go Round division winners EACH DAY (Fri & Sat), Open Average Awards will start with saddles and buckles, depends on amount of entries as to how far down we go with prizes in each division. I am working on awards now on a daily basis......they will be awesome! As for entry fee questions and all other info, go check out the entry form and flyer at the Texas State website & if you have a question that you do not see there, give me a holler! Looking forward to the show!!!!!

On the added money question that I had, I don't think I made it clear. On the flyer if you look at the Entry fees and Reservations part, it says open 4-D barrels, Friday $3500 added and $3500 for Satruday. And then on the entry blank it says $4000 for Friday and $4000 for Saturday. I told my friend if you add it up, it is $4000 per day. But she wants to make sure. My friend doesn't do internet or e-mail and doesn't want to call herself. Anyway that is what I was asking. I'll just tll her it is the $4000 and be done with her questions.

Mike is already threaten to change the locks on the tack just because I made one little comment I could exercise them with one arm just have to figure out how to get saddle on and get up there with one arm. I certainly realize that the smaller the pattern, the faster the barrel race runs. And I know no one can predict the future, but from the last couple of years track record, what if a storm blows in about that time, will the show be cancelled, rescheduled, get your money back?

Post by: Shelley Millis on April 19, 2009, 10:54:00 PM: June is too early to worry about another hurricane blowing us off the map again for the State Show......I know we are in Texas so anything is possible weather wise! We should be in good shape for weather situations in the new arena, still plenty of covered warm up, almost 300 stalls, over 90 rv hook ups, we are in good shape. The arena is of good size, should be maybe a decent sized pattern, nothing set in stone yet.

I know June MAY be early to worry about another bad hurricane season, but with this crazy weather, who knows. I don't currently live on the coast (but have in the past) and normally would not have even thought about it, but the last couple of years certainly has been active.

I sure hope so, I go back to the doctor May 4, he might as well completely release me, I painted the grandbaby's room this past weekend, I figured my arm would be sore the next day, but all was well. No stiffness no hurting, so i see no reason why I can't start riding again. Me and the doc might have to have a come to Jesus meeting.

I agree Laura...I love the Waco HOT facility but it will be cool just do do something new this year & who knows maybe we will get more shows to come to Katy after State, it is a cool place for a show afterall! I hope you do have your new trailer & congrats!

yeppers...and you have the age group incentives added to the open this year too! That way us "tweeners" finally have another shot at a seperate payout too!!! Buckles for each go round division winner in the open AND average saddles and buckles in the open. Youth & seniors on Sunday have saddles and buckles too.

Yall don't forget to put down on your entry forms about where you want to run....you may choose your numbers this year!!!!

Lilbit, the arena in back is set up like the old mansion arena was, we will set up some panels to make more of a real alleyway though. Trust me, the ground in back is SO MUCH BETTER than any of the other arenas in Katy have ever been, that is why we are using the new back arena.

I went when they 1st changed the place up.. It looked like they picked up the front pen and moved it back to the back. It has been a while and i did not know if they had done some changes. The ground was fine then... I really dont have to worry about ground with this mare... She will go through anything. Atleast it seems right now! LOL!!

Your set up sounds like the way Anna did Barrel Blast when it was in the old pen. It is just a shame that the big nice pen aint used for some kinda of event....

Lots of folks are going to be hauling in trying to run later on Friday in the Open, so we will start with the Open 4D on Friday morning at 9am as advertised, we will take the scheduled 12 noon to 12:30pm Lunch Break, THEN, we will come back with at least two hours of exhibition barrels, and then resume the Open 4D Barrels after the exhibitions. We have an awesome ground crew with top of the line equipment so as to ensure consistant ground conditions throughtout the day. The two hour additional exhibitions will be cash only paid at the alleyway gate before you go.
We are also taking entries until the last 50 runners, hopefully this will help everyone out that is trying to make it there to run Friday AND Saturday!!!!

Here is what I have been doing so far, folks are mostly asking for certain times that they need to run instead of specific numbers. I have only a couple that picked specific numbers. So if you want to, tell me about what time you want to run each day and I can give you a "7" number to fit that time slot! How does that sound?

You can enter online until June 3rd with no late fee, or enter at the show with a one time late fee for the entire show.

I am hard at work, we had tons of entries come in today and from Saturday, this will be one heck of a show, everyone seems to be really excited! I know we have LOTS of great awards, drawings, give aways, raffles and more!!! So many cool people in the barrel racing world, I appreciate all of you and all you are doing to make the Texas NBHA State show a success in 2009!

Everything is more expensive, the facilities are not HALF as nice, or as workable as what they are at Waco. Not to mention it is not even VAGUELY centrally located. Stupid choice. I don't remember being asked what I thought about where it should be...but I am stating my opinion now for next year. Ya'll have fun, because I won't be there, and I know I am not the only one skipping it this year!! >:( I am headed to Ardmore, where a stall is $15, and the arena is air-conditioned.

I think the arena in Katy is MUCH nicer then Waco and I think the ground is much better, the last time I ran at Waco, the ground was terrible. Everyone has the choice to go or not go, like others have said, there are many races to choose from that weekend, so go with what is best for you and your horse!

I totally agree!!!!! We all have a choice to go or not to go. So why must some people get on a public forum for the FIRST time and complain about a race. You either go or not..... end of story.

I thought she would still be out due to her ACL surgery so I signed her up for the SAT on Saturday the 4th- going to just enter late to be sure she can get a late enough draw # to make it. You know Deb, that is the sad thing about it, no matter where the State Show is held, somebody has to bash it. Someone could just get on this board or another board and simply state, I am not coming or I am coming, why must the negativity be procasted on a public forum. If these negative people want to step up to the plate, let them put on a huge show like the State show and they can have the show where ever they choose. I have never seen any one work as hard as Shelley does to get this show in tip top shape. Granted we are there to help her at the show, (after all the hard stuff is done) but she is a one woman team preparing for this show; planning, sponsors, added money, prizes, etc. she does it all.

Thanks Renee.....your great!!!! Missed seeing yall last weekend in Halletsville, but I am sure we will see ya soon anyway!!!! And you are right, I would love to be able to move the show around our great State......looking for options all of the time, moving around the entire State is an awesome idea.

That is what the State FFA Rodeo does. Every year we have been to a different place. One year was Fort Worth, then Corpus Christi, then Lubbock and this year is Dallas. Not that I would like to have it centrally located but it always gives me the chance to do a field trip with the kids to some historical place where ever we end up so I don't mind it too much.

Post by: memphis on May 27, 2009, 06:29:37 PM: Well if you really want to Pi$$ everyone off.....they should make it where you MUST qualify to go to STATE.....to me, I may show up at the last minute, may not go at all, I just rejoined NBHA this year.....but the point is.....I look at it like a priviledge to be able to have a barrel race this nice anywhere to be able to go run in with such great prizes and who knows even leave with a "State Championship Title".....people are going to complain no matter where it's at.....because it's not in their own backyard......if you don't want to go, then haul to somewhere you want to be......It would be different if you ran all year in your district in order to qualify to go to State and then had to drive 1000 miles to get there.....kind of like Georgia....but that's the way the ball rolls......good luck to everyone going.....

A lot of barrelracers and a whole lot of Texas. As for me, I don't care where any of the barrel races are scheduled at, I pick and choose which ones I want to go to.

What crosscreek and followers are considering centrally located means whatever is closest to them, not considering how NOT close it is for others in Texas. No matter where the barrelrace is held, there are a lot of someones having to make an undesirable drive whether the NBHA State Show is in Katy or in Waco. I did not see all this location bashing last year and I bet there were loads of contestants that drove as far to Waco as crosscreek and others would have to drive to Katy.

As others before me have said on this thread, let's stop beating this dead horse and be supportive of each other and understand that we can't always have it our way, make the best of it and wish those that can attend the show in Katy good luck and maybe all will see each other down the road at another barrelrace.

Lisa, with that said, then I am not sure what Judi's beef is with the location unless she had planned on trying to attend 2 different barrelraces and now they are too far apart from each other. ON A SERIOUS NOTE: I have no issue with driving to Katy. It looks to be about 5 hours for me. I feel pretty lucky that the last
few years its been an hour and half from my house in the past. Before Waco, only Austin, and Abilene, and San Antonio. Its not
like I've been having to drive to Amarillo for it. Spreading the state show around sounds like a great idea, tho. Variety is the spice
of life like Snazzy said. You can't please everyone---never will. Some will come this year that never entered before, some won't
because of location---it all evens out. But ONE thing about it. YOU CAN'T WIN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FROM YOUR RECLINER.
AND IF YOU DON'T ENTER YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF. There you go. LauraLoo goes crazy there for justa moment...lol.....

how old is your grandson?? who are his folks?? I lived in Hamilton for 8 yrs, :) til we built our house in Gustine. I still own a house over there
and hopefully it will sell!! Yep, its a nice set up over there. There ground sure needs alittle work, but its not bad if you work it correct. It gets
alittle "plunger" stickiness to it and alittle hard at times. The stalls are nice, and they have put a large amount of RV spots in the last few years.
The kiddos would sure enjoy the swimming pool at the arena that is for sure, and the hotel is right next door---you can walk to the arena and stalls from there. The arena recently sold to a new owner from what I heard so perhaps maybe the rental might go down alittle. It needed to. Its
alittle high in my opinion. No one can afford to rent it that is local, or dist nbha level, just out of reach for us :( But no doubt...its a nice place.

I swear it is the hottest event we participate in. The last two years the temp in the parking lot was 110. No kidding, it just saps all you have. They do have shade cloth where we have tied our horses, which helps them somewhat, and we always bring a big shop fan to plug in in the seats.

I think that is cool that they are going to have a break and then come back during the barrel rave.. but is that really a break if they start with exhibitions??? There will still need to be tractor drivers, barrel setters, announcer.. etc....

we will run thru #150 (approx. NOON!) then take our break, both days.
Friday we will have two hours of exhibition during the break and then come back with #151 at 2:30pm!
Saturday we will only break for 30 minutes (12 -12:30pm)

Both days we will come back after the break with run #151!

The software crash wiped out the Youth, Senior, & poles draws. The issue seems to be resolved so we will be re-entering those tomorrow and a draw will be posted. If you requested a late or early draw you will get it in these classes.

Now, back to loading up all of our goodies!!!

If you read the information above the draw numbers on the Texas website then it should have been pretty clear why the numbers were the way that they were. Some folks did not read the information before they clicked on the draw and therefore, ended up confused. If you made a draw request you got it, if you did not request then you got a random draw position. Since a few folks did not understand or read the info, we put the draw in a spreadsheet format instead so that you could see your actual draw number without it filling in the empty positions. THESE are still the right numbers, just in a spreadsheet format instead. Start at 9am, break at #150. Start back after break with #151 both days. Hope that clears up the confusion.

It looked scary from my vantage point I'm sure it was scary from hers.. When Mike had to leave and Jay stepped on the tractor he did a super job..

I'm glad she's ok.. that could have been worse if her foot had not fallen out of the sturrip. I figured she sprained something with the way she twisted when she fell.... When Shelley came running with the overnight kit.. I thought Donna was worried about her make-up!! Glad she's gonna be ok and will only be very sore.

I'm gonna say this. I read all the posts last night. I don't agree with the nasty tone and the anonymous screen name of the person who posted all the ugly stuff about the State Show. I agreed with Ronda (just love you and your spirit, girl!) that if you see something that is wrong, step up to help instead of bellyaching. However, I hate to see posts pulled just because they are critical or not popular.

We were told while at Crockett that there had been several falls by horses and that one gal got sent to the hospital - must have mrab's Donna, here's prayers for her speedy recovery. We also heard that attendance was down and that the numbers were changing and that people had a hard time getting there in time for their runs. Folks, there has never been a perfect barrel race, and I am sure everyone involved did their best. This is a big show, and, I am sure, quite hard to manage. I didn't go for several reasons; one of which was that I couldn't understand the "average" thing. Would love someone to explain it to me, in simple terms. I would have hated to run in two d's and got thrown out of the average for doing so.

So, like me, if you don't understand or agree with the rules of the game, STAY HOME!

I guess standard NBHA rates apply? $31 for the Open?

I started him on Total Control, Thia-Cal to ease up his anxiety, and cut out dried alfalfa (don't know why I been giving him speed these last few months!).

Girl, I have won a ton of stuff in the slower d's! That money spends just like the higher d's money, and the buckles are just as nice!! I love running in those d's for several reasons - we have not as much pressure therefore it is more fun, there are not as many competitors in those d's, and when we move up in speed - what a rush!!

P.S. - I, too, am old, so we will toddle around with our walkers squinting for each other!! lol!! What is your name?? If I may be so nosy??

We had a 3D mare that had the gift of landing in the money 9 out of 10 runs. We found a good home for her as the kids moved up in their ability. I told my husband as she left our place I bet there goes our most consistent money earner and (unfortunately) I was right. She was easy, easy, never hit a barrel and gave you the same run every time.

Tinker Bell's daughter, Heather, runs an Ap mare that is just like that - within tenths every run, 19 yrs. old, a total babysitter. Heather is winning two saddles on her this year and is placing in two other classes also, and this is Heather's first year to really run! She is whooping both me and her mom in points! I used Frosty at the end of last year for points in the Seniors 3D. I had only run her about three times, and the last time I ran her, I dropped the reins behind the third, never missed a lick whipping, she never missed a step, and picked up the reins about halfway home!! Can't put a price on one that is that well trained; enough to take a novice rider like myself to the pay window!!

I so very much miss you all. Ginny did not make the show as she was in Georgia with me at the Georgia Quarter Horse show in Athens at the UofA. It was okay, but not the same.

Shelly, huggers. You did a yeoman's job and you get a double hug. Sticks n stones n falling off horses can break your bone, words are just that. Give us a call or we will call you after the dust settles and we give give you a bigger hug.
Still on the road in GA. Two more weeks here and then to Tryon, NC again. Nothing (well, almost nothing) better than a barrel racer hug.
Unless it is Bob Gould washing our motor home.

I had a great weekend, my horse came back from being sore and ran two good runs, so good we took home our first 2D buckle in the open on Sat!! I have to thank Horseswim.com, Kimmi Bylers outfit for helping me and Casey so much. They are great people out there!!!! 8)
