Swindlers are preying on the families of people missing after the Indian Ocean tsunami with e-mails saying their loved ones have turned up alive and well, thousands of miles away in Togo.

The macabre scam says the missing person simply needs to be sent cash--via a middleman--for a plane ticket to get home. Several Norwegian relatives of missing tourists have received the mails in recent days, independent TV2 said Thursday.

"We are contacting you on behalf of your relative who is stranded here in our country, Lome, Togo," it quoted the message as saying.
