Title: 2nd November Update
Post by: Tamet Gould on November 12, 2006, 07:11:36 AM
Well I have to tell yall, we are very excited at our house.  Ben has self initiated completely on his own the last 3 days!   :()&  For those of you not familiar with what I mean; HE HAS GONE TO THE BATHROOM ALLLLLLLL BYYYY HIMMMMSELFFFFF THE LAST 3 DAYS!!!!!!   8) 8) 8) 8)

We are still seeing lots of stemming but his vocalization has taken a leap, we are teaching him to sign his name and teaching him to say his name and tell you what it is when you ask him, we have also implemented him starting to name all of us.

I put him back on Cortef last thursday, Nov 9th, because the excessive stemming usually means something isnt firing or working quit right and it is normally some type of inflamation systemically that is the culprit.

We are very excited he is following instructions MUCH better in the last week.  Simple instructions, he will be setting in the chair with his Dad eating raisins, craisins, walnut, and pecans and when they finish up the bowel Bob tells him to put it in the sink and he gets up and takes the bowel and puts it in the sink.  He is starting to put stuff in the trash when told and he will put his own underwear own in the bathroom when you lay them on the sink after he gets thru using the restroom.  He is just doing SO many things!  Little things that you wouldnt pay any attention to in your home but they are HUGE steps here.  He is closing the door when he walks out of the house.  When he went to put his plate in the sink after eating Friday night his fork fell on the floor and with the plate in one hand, he reached down and picked up the fork and put BOTH of them in the sink.  I know, this sounds silly to you but these are BIGGGGGGGGGGG steps for him.   We didnt tell him to do that, he did it ALLL ONNNNNNN HISSSS OWNNNNNN!!!!!   8) 8) 8)

 Hello,
I am a new member to this forum. I have been reading about Ben for quite some time but i have never replied til now. I have an 8 year old son that i adopted when he was 4 years old. He has ben diagnosed with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder and several other things. He has had behavioral problems and learning delays. We recently found about Dr Kendal Stewart and had our first appointment with him last week. I read in one of your earlier posts that you also took Ben to see Dr Stewart. I was wondering what your over all opinion of the Dr was, and did his methods seem to work for Ben?

He changed our life or should I save he changed Bens and that changed ours.   >PEACE<  You will need to do many more things besides just the meds, you will need to change diet, put him on supplements and take things out of his daily life that you have never given a thought to.    If he has behavioral issues get him in an ABA/VB program.

Thank you for your reply. It encourages me to know that Dr Stewart helped your son. We Have tried several therapists in my town and was even driving 4 hours one way to an attachment therapist in Weatherford,Tx. All of the therapists have basically given up on him. When we found out about Dr Stewart, I called his office and got an appointment. He did all of his tests and told us what I had been thinking allof these years..His "wiring" has some problems, but they can be fixed. I am anxious to see the results of the program we are starting. I was also wondering if you could explain what an ABA/VB program is..
                 Thank you.

Applied Behavioral Analysis with an emphasis on Verbal Behavior.  Here are some links to read up on.

This will be a starting point for you.   I have been able to teach Ben things at home using this system and am constantly training for it to help Ben function as normal as possible in life.
