What bit would you suggest?

I have a gelding who will slow work absolutely perfect with a old rusty shanked snaffle, this was the bit he was broke with.  He gives laterally and vertically with this but would you suggest running with it. I call this bit old faithfull because I can always get him to respond well with it. I used to run him in a lifter with a 5" shank and smooth snaffle mouthpeice.  He worked well with this til he developed some soreness issues which resulted in ducking off.  Once the vet fixed him and garanteed him sound he still wanted to duck, so i went to a long shank combo with a loose curb for control and ran him on cool as ice (a calming agent), this has been working, but hes not finishing turns as well as i think he should. What would you do?

If your horse works well in the old rusty bit then that's what I would put
on him and run him in until I was absolutely sure that he was listening to
my hands.  At that point, if you want to try something else, you can but I
always like to keep a horse in a bit that he is comfortable and responsive
to my hands.
