what bit is best in this situation?

i have a barrel mare who has some problems when it comes to riding. i can do lots of ground work but as soon as she gets past a lope in any situation slowing down or stopping is out of the question. at the moment i have her in a medium port bit to keep her tongue from going over her bit but i was thinking maybe a chain snaffle or a harder bit my be the best.

I would like to ask you a question before giving you my answer....you say "ground work"....does that mean
you have driven this mare on the ground much??  Or are you only referring to round pen work?? Please tell.
