Good bit for training barrel horse in

I have started my 7 yr old appaloosa on barrels and I was wondering what would be a good bit to start him off in. He has plenty of whoa and has a lot of bend. I started with just a tom thumb bit but it was like he had nothing in his mouth at all so I think it was too soft for him. If you have any suggestions I would love the help. Thanks
