At eleven months of age Penelope was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer – neuroblastoma. She has undergone countless scans, bone marrow biopsies from 6 locations and 7 different times so a total of 42 total biopsies of marrow, aspirations, stem cell harvesting, antibody therapy, 10 surgeries, 28 chemo treatments and 15 rounds of radiation. Penelope suffered paralysis from the waist down for over a year after one of her surgeries. She now has partial paralysis with a 45 degree spinal curvature that will need corrective surgery. The first trial had no effect on her cancer. She is now waiting to be enrolled in a second clinical trial. All FDA treatments have ALL been exhausted without a cure.
