Alley Issue
« on: August 01, 2005, 01:09:43 PM »
We went to a Ed Wright training in Jan 05 in Brenham Texas. The training was great but we are having some other issues now.  The reason we were at the training was because the horse was too powerful coming out of the alley way.  She is considered to be a hot horse. She has alot of anxiety and gets very nervous.  I had mentioned to Ed then that we just put her on Ultium to put weight on her.  He mentioned to watch her on that type of feed.  She has been on the feed since Dec 04. These last couple of months she has been terrible in the alley way.  - Refusing to go in , pawing, etc.  This last weekend she reared.  We had her vet checked 2 months ago.  She did have a pinched nerve, which they adjusted then.  She is a new horse for us. We have had her since March 04.  After the vet check we thought maybe some on the issues would go away, but they have not.  Could it be the feed working against he, a chemical in balance or a thyroid problem?  Our trainer said for us to stop running her and go back to slow work because she is shouldering real bad. Which I agree.  Do you have any other suggestions for the anxiety and the nervousness?  Should we change the feed.

I would have to say that you are probably still dealing with some kind of health/soundness issue.  Your mare is telling you she is dreading having to go in the arena and perform.  It's up to you and your vet and/or chiropractor to figure out what is wrong.  Have you had a thorough lameness
exam done on her?  Checked her teeth?  Feet?  Back, neck and shoulders? Does your equipment fit her correctly?  Are you doing something with your hands or feet that is confusing to her or too harsh?  There are lots of things that you need to consider in figuring out what the problem could be. And yes, you need to be doing lots of slow work on her once you figure out what the problem is.  It will probably take a while to rebuild her confidence.
