AVMA Offers Advice to Pet Owners after Nationwide Food Recall

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), in response to a national pet food recall, offers the following information and advice to concerned pet owners: Menu Foods, Inc., a Canadian private-label pet food manufacturer based in Statesville, Ontario, has issued a recall on all its “cuts and gravy” style dog and cat food products produced at its facility in Emporium, Kansas, between December 3, 2006, and March 6, 2007. Report: U.S. most prolific source of online attacks

U.S. networks pumped out the highest percentage of attacks during the second half of last year, with China running a distant second, according to a report released Monday by security firm Symantec. The U.S. accounted for 31 percent of malicious activity originating from computer networks, while 10 percent came from China and 7 percent from Germany, Symantec said in its Internet Security Threat Report. Europe to develop guidelines on RFID

The European Commission will develop guidelines for the use of radio frequency identification, or RFID, in businesses and government. RFID technology is used to identify assets wirelessly at short range, and is used in many industries to help make companies more efficient and to prevent theft. Speaking at the CeBit technology trade show in Hannover, Germany, on Thursday, information society commissioner Viviane Reding said the Commission would draft rules later this year to amend EU e-privacy legislation that factors into the use of RFID. Best practices for antispyware makers finalized

The nonprofit Anti-Spyware Coalition announced on Thursday that it had finalized a set of documents designed to provide software companies that develop spyware-fighting products with new information and tactics. The two documents were originally released in draft form in January, and readers were given a one-month feedback period to contribute their comments and opinions. Politicians press for antispyware law yet again

update WASHINGTON–Members of the U.S. House of Representatives vowed Thursday not to let a bill aimed at curbing spyware die for a third time. Leaders of a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee focused on consumer protection issues said they were mystified that earlier versions of the so-called Spy Act overwhelmingly passed the House in 2004 and in 2005 but were ignored by the Senate. Microsoft probes possible IE 7 phishing hole

Microsoft is investigating a possible vulnerability in Internet Explorer 7 that could help cybercrooks launch phishing scams, the company said Wednesday. An attacker can use an error message displayed by the latest Microsoft browser to send Web surfers to malicious Web sites that will display with the address of a trusted site, such as a bank, Aviv Raff, a developer in Israel, wrote on his Web site. Trend Micro acquires HijackThis antispyware tool

Antivirus specialist Trend Micro on Wednesday said it has acquired HijackThis, a tool used to remove spyware from Windows PCs. HijackThis is a free tool developed by Dutch student Merijn Bellekom. The tool is mostly used by technical users to pinpoint spyware infections on Windows machines and help remove them. It has been downloaded more than 10 million times, according to Trend Micro. Calif. court drops charges against former HP Exec.

Update A California judge on Wednesday dismissed the charges against former Hewlett-Packard Chairman Patricia Dunn in the HP spying scandal. The three other remaining defendants–former HP attorney Kevin Hunsaker; private detective Ronald DeLia; and Matthew DePante of data-brokering company Action Research Group–pleaded no contest to a count of fraudulent wire communications at Santa Clara County Superior Court in San Jose, Calif., the state attorney general’s office said in a statement.
