Witnesses from the AVMA and other organizations testify about current concerns A subcommittee of the House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture held a wide-ranging hearing in May to review the welfare of animals in agriculture.Several veterinarians were among a dozen witnesses who testified before the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry about improving the welfare of farm animals while protecting the food supply, consumer choice, and biomedical research. The Food and Drug Administration on May 2 announced the removal of hydrogen peroxide from its list of aquaculture drugs with low regulatory priority. Under enforcement discretion, the FDA had previously not objected to the use of hydrogen peroxide to control fungi on all species of fish in all life stages, including eggs. Hydrogen peroxide has now, however, been approved by the FDA as a new animal drug with the trade name 35%PEROX-AID. For more info click here
The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank suspended all public access May 15 because of a lack of funding. Remaining resources are being used to maintain the databank for an additional six to nine months. Administered through the Department of Agriculture, FARAD is a computer-based decision support system that provides livestock producers, extension specialists, and veterinarians with information on how to avoid drug, pesticide, and environmental contaminant residue problems.
