From Opening Session to a series of special meetings, the one-health concept was an overarching theme throughout the 144th AVMA Annual Convention, held July 14-18 in Washington, D.C. The event attracted 10,339 attendees, breaking the previous record of 10,191 that was set at the 2006 convention in Honolulu. It is being reported that a horse in Hall County has tested positive for the West Nile virus. This is the 4th horse in the state of Nebraska to be diagnosed with the virus in the last 4 weeks, prompting Nebraska Agriculture Director Greg Ibach to encourage all horse owners to consult their veterinarians. Recently in Georgia, a calf that had been shown at a livestock event was diagnosed with rabies and had to be humanely euthanized. A veterinarian with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System says rabies in cattle is rare. “While we do see rabies in domesticated animals, it’s not the norm,” said Dr. Soren Rodning. “Recent studies show that more than 90 percent of all animals diagnosed as rabid are wild animals.” He points out that most reported cases of rabies in Alabama are in wildlife, primarily raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes. Rodning adds that it is important to

The Humane Society and other leading animal advocates are issuing a warning, while the high-tech lost and found systems are important, the chips can’t always be read and critical changes need to be made to make sure your pet can be identified. Tiny glass computer chips are embedded in all of Eleanor
New plan outlines collaborative approach, coordinated action among nations As the human toll from avian influenza rises to 321 cases, with 194 deaths worldwide, leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico have released a plan that outlines how the three countries will work together if the highly pathogenic virus makes its way to North America. In a joint statement released during the August 20-21 North American Leaders’ Summit in Montebello, Quebec, Canada, President Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calder?n announced the completion of the North American Plan for Avian and Pandemic
It’s not exactly hyperbole to say that some spam might just kill you. In 2006, a Vancouver woman died of heavy-metal poisoning after consuming common brand-name drugs purchased inexpensively online; in 2003, a 19-year-old Rutgers University student overdosed on Xanax purchased online without a prescription. These are two different scenarios, but both illustrate the dangers of unregulated, rogue pharmacies that are active online today. For more info click hereÂ
