Is there a doctor in the barn?

This summer was fairly uneventful at LePage’s Rising Sun Farm in Derby. The cows are healthy and there have been no medical emergencies. That’s fortunate. The organic dairy farm has been without a veterinarian since June, when Lorri and Bobby LePage received a letter from their clinic saying the farm would no longer be served. “It came a shock to say the least,” Lorri LePage said. “There’s only one other vet in the area that does large animals, and they are maxed out.” For the rest of the story click here.

U.S. is now free of canine rabies virus, CDC says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Federal health experts declared a small victory against a fatal and untreatable virus on Friday, saying canine rabies has disappeared from the United States. While dogs may still become infected from raccoons, skunks or bats, they will not catch dog-specific rabies from another dog, the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. New chip promises to track kids from miles away

A technology originally developed to help the military track operatives in the field may in the next few years be used by parents to find kids in an amusement park. Gentag will try to commercialize what it calls a Radar Response Tag, which effectively acts as an accurate homing beacon. In field tests, the tag can track someone more than 12 miles away and pinpoint their location within 3 feet, said Gentag founder John Peeters in an interview.
