USDA bars imports The USDA barred imports of all live birds from Saskatchewan yesterday after broilers tested positive for the North American strain of H7N3 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. This is not the same highly pathogenic Avian Influenza H5NI virus that has spread through birds in Asia, Europe and Africa. In accordance with an agreement between the United States and Canada, USDA is barring imports of all live birds, including chickens, turkeys and others, along with unprocessed avian products from the entire province of Saskatchewan. For more information, see the USDA statement at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/newsroom/content/2007/09/ai_canada_statement.shtml.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The spread of a deadly livestock disease from a laboratory in Britain has not stopped U.S. officials from considering where to build a new animal disease research lab in this country. The Aug. 3 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Britain was tied to a government laboratory and a private vaccine manufacturer in Pirbright, England. Initial tests show a second outbreak, which is still under investigation, was the same strain as the lab-related outbreak. Still, the Homeland Security Department is moving ahead with plans to consider relocating a similar lab isolated on Plum Island, N.Y.,
America’s Horse, September 27, 2007 – The American Quarter Horse Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of the Refrigerator Fund to the equine research program. This fund to support research for critically injured horses is in honor of American Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading money earner and multiple world champion Refrigerator. The fund was graciously created by Jim and Marilyn Helzer of Arlington, Texas, in memory of their beloved champion. “Refrigerator was a horse that touched the heart of every American Quarter Horse owner, trainer, jockey and fan; he was America’s Quarter Horse,” said Jim Helzer.
