Proposal could be harmful, AVMA says; sparks discord within CVMA An upcoming California referendum on mandatory changes to livestock confinement practices has the AVMA concerned the proposal could compromise animal welfare by requiring producers to adopt systems that don’t account for all aspects of humane treatment. Although reluctant to involve the AVMA in state politics, preferring instead to address veterinary and animal-related issues at the national level, Association leaders believe the referendum, sponsored by national organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States, warranted a response because it is part of a larger, state-by-state campaign
The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking comment on a survey it plans to conduct on disposal methods of unused pharmaceuticals by the health care industry. The EPA in an Aug. 12 Federal Register notice announced the draft survey and other supporting documents, which can be found on the agency’s Web site, www.epa.gov/guide/304m/ or from the federal online docket www.regulations.gov/. Docket No. EPA-HQ-OW-2008-0517. There is a questionnaire pertaining to veterinary hospitals. The EPA is asking stakeholders to comment on specific aspects of the upcoming survey and its scope. Veterinary researchers from the University of Minnesota have identified a gene potentially responsible for polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) in Quarter Horses and, in doing so, they uncovered a number of research leads to pursue. In a recent study investigators found the gene in nearly half of 36 different breeds of horses tested. They consider this surprising, as PSSM is most often thought of as a disease of Quarter Horses and Drafts. Continue reading…
