America’s Horse, March 24, 2009 – AQHA’s Public Policy Committee’s vision of a grassroots lobbying group made up of knowledgeable and passionate AQHA members became a reality February 10-12 in Washington, D.C. The pilot program, which is known as Q-Contact, was created to develop a “key contact” system to enable AQHA to expand its efforts in national public policy work with a functional “grassroots or grass tops” type program. Key contact advocacy is based on select industry leaders developing a strong working relationship with lawmakers and their staff. The initial goal of the Q-Contact program was to identify, train
AVMA tells Senate subcommittee that nation is at risk A new report is raising concerns that the federal government’s veterinarian workforce isn’t large enough to guarantee a safe food supply and effectively address zoonotic diseases. The Government Accounting Office, which authored the report, found that the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services have not assessed the sufficiency of their veterinarian workforces despite the fact that agencies employing “mission-critical” veterinarians are currently experiencing shortages or anticipating future shortages. The AVMA Web site now features more frequent updates on the status of select state bills and regulations under consideration that would affect the veterinary profession. The AVMA Communications Division’s Department of State Legislative and Regulatory Affairs tracks pertinent proposals in state legislative and executive branches, as well as certain state court cases, providing daily alerts to state VMAs by e-mail and monthly updates to a broader audience via e-mail and the Web. The monthly reports are online at www.avma.org/advocacy/state/. Now, updates on some state bills and regulations are available every two weeks on the same site.

The governor had proposed, as one of many tax hikes, applying state sales taxes to veterinary services for the first time—but the California VMA organized a successful grassroots campaign opposing the measure. “Requiring pet owners to pay a tax to care for

However, researchers have linked cases of acquired scoliosis presented at Cornell University to migration of a parasite only recently reported in horses. Amy Johnson, DVM, a resident in Large Animal Internal Medicine at Cornell, discussed this issue at the 2008 American Association of Equine Practitioners convention, held Dec. 6-10 in San Diego, Calif.
