Enter Online Schaumburg, IL — While reported cases of rabies in the United States dropped in 2008, veterinarians and public health officials warn that an increase in the number of reported cases in cats poses a health risk to both animals and people. Fifty-nine horses have been quarantined because of a suspected contagious infection at Hoosier Park racetrack in central Indiana. Hoosier Park officials placed the horses in quarantine Saturday after one Thoroughbred at the stable began exhibiting signs of Streptococcus equi infection, or strangles, a contagious bacterial disease common in horses that can be life-threatening. Anytime a horse develops fever, malaise, and a stumbling gait or inability to stand, owners should contact a veterinarian immediately–they might be dealing with equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).
