Euthanasia is a topic horse owners rarely talk about. As a veterinarian, I have had to euthanize many animals. Senate panel backs horse welfare bill

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a bill Thursday that would create a state board to study horse welfare issues and assist in dealing with unwanted horses in Kentucky. House Bill 398, sponsored by House agriculture committee chairman Tom McKee, D-Cynthiana, would create the Kentucky Equine Health and Welfare Council. It now goes to the full Senate. The measure is a horse-specific counterpart to Senate Bill 105, which would create the state Livestock Care Standards Commission to establish welfare regulations for any on-farm agricultural livestock. Livestock bills advance in several U.S. states

By unanimous vote, the Ohio House of Representatives has passed legislation to establish the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, and comparable legislation is pending in the Ohio Senate. Once through the Senate, the law will go to Gov. Ted Strickland for his signature, after which the governor and other parties will appoint experts in animal care and welfare to the board. “It’s important that we continue to (organize the board) so Ohioans will be in charge of setting standards for Ohio agriculture,” said Rep. Allan Sayre (D., Dover), a primary sponsor of the bill in the House.

New Hampshire House votes to ban dog racing

The state House has voted to ban live dog racing in New Hampshire. The state’s two remaining dog tracks currently don’t conduct live greyhound racing and instead provide simulcasts of races held elsewhere. The bill would eliminate the tracks’ option of resuming live racing. Read More…

Proposed bill aims to protect endangered horses in N.C.

Last week U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones (NC-3) introduced H.R. 4867, the Corolla Wild Horse Protection Act. The bill would require the U.S. Department of the Interior, the State of North Carolina, the County of Currituck and the non-profit Corolla Wild Horse Fund to craft a new herd management plan that would allow for a herd of no less than 100 horses. That is the minimum number of horses that a preliminary report from renowned equine geneticist Dr. Gus Cothran of Texas A&M University says is necessary to maintain the herd’s genetic viability.
