Horses often seem to be accidents waiting to happen, and everyone who has owned horses for any significant period can recount at least one horror story that starts with: “You aren’t going to believe this, but …” Less apparent, but equally true, is the realization that horse businesses, by their very nature, can be “accident prone.” Agricultural jobs traditionally are among the nation’s most dangerous. Whether horses are your vocation or avocation, it is important to shield yourself from as much potential liability as possible. Failure to do so can be devastating, personally and professionally. The costs of keeping horses have risen for the majority of owners in the last three years, with those in the southeast and south central United States being the hardest hit by escalating feed and fuel prices. Continue reading…
A national shortage of veterinarians in rural areas is hobbling the Bay State’s farming communities, and the lack of doting country vets has some specialists expressing worry about safe food production. “If you don’t have a vet there to keep everything healthy and on track, you can really see the downturn,” said Heather Lord, herd manager at Highlawn Farm in Lee, which has some 200 dairy cows. A shortage of food-animal veterinarians places stress on producers and affects the health of livestock, experts say, especially in the key areas of disease and pathogens. According to data from
JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri House has sent a bill to the Senate that would allow horse slaughtering in Missouri. On a 91-61 vote, the Republican-controlled House passed the legislation Thursday. The legislation seeks to bypass a federal ban on meat inspectors working in horse slaughtering plants by getting processors to pay for the inspections at the state level. Under the bill, meat processors would pay into a fund to the Missouri Department of Agriculture, which would pass the inspection fees on to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Sponsoring Rep. Jim Viebrock, R-Republic, said USDA would
OCALA, FL — The chestnut stallion was the love of Zarela Olsen’s life. A majestic hall-of-fame horse with personality and a copper coat bright as a new penny, Capuchino often greeted his fawning owner with kisses, nuzzling her neck and licking the back of her ears. “When he died, he took my heart with him,” said Olsen, 46, of the Paso Fino horse who died in Ocala in 2009. “I could not stop crying and crying.” But Olsen had planned ahead, investing $160,000 in the replicating services of a biotech company specializing in the controversial practice of
The notion of feeding pets with raw-food diets has stirred mixed reactions from veterinarians. Vets who oppose the idea contend that raw foods could pose risks to pets and people, including poisoning from E. coli, salmonella and other bacteria. Meanwhile, supporters say that cats and dogs have become immune to bacteria-laden diets, an argument that has been “demonstrated to be false,” according to an animal nutrition expert. Animal rights advocates are strengthening their call to end animal abuse across the state, urging legislators to pass legislation in 2010 that would crack down on animal fights, puppy mills and the intense confinement of farm animals. The calls came at the 2010 New York State Humane Lobby Day March 24, at which Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky was presented with the Humane Society of the United States Humane Legislator of the Year award in recognition of her efforts in supporting animal protection legislation in 2009.
