CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia horse owners are being advised to vaccinate their animals for rabies. The state Department of Agriculture issued the warning Monday. The agency says a horse in Monroe County tested positive for the disease and was destroyed in October. The state has reported a final tally for one of the worst outbreaks of eastern equine encephalitis in 30 years — by veterinarians’ counts 133 horses were stricken, with all but four killed by the mosquito-borne disease, most in Southwest Michigan. At 55 confirmed EEE cases, 2010 is tied with 1981 for having the second highest number on record, said Michigan Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian Steven Halstead. Steve Schell struggled at first with the idea of dumping his 350-cow dairy herd. The 56-year-old farmer grew up milking. Morning chores and work-filled weekends were a part of his childhood.
