New testing policy in Australia for animals susceptible to Hendra

Queensland horse owners who have had a Hendra outbreak on their property will have to submit any dogs, cats, guinea pigs and pigs for testing. Biosecurity Queensland has updated its policy on sampling pets other than horses for Hendra, in light of the case of Dusty the Kelpie. CSU equine lab fire results in millions of dollars in damage

As investigation of last week’s Equine Reproduction Laboratory fire continues, Colorado State University is picking up the pieces from one of the most expensive losses in its history. As far as CSU officials can tell, it’s at least the university’s third-costliest loss, bested only by damage from the 1997 Spring Creek Flood and the 1970 fire that destroyed Old Main, CSU’s original administration building, university spokeswoman Dell Rae Moellenberg said. The Partnership for Food Protection and the Food & Drug Administration announced Aug. 1 the launch of the Pet Event Tracking Network (PETNet), which is a secure, web-based information exchange system that will allow FDA and federal and state agencies to share initial information about pet-food related incidents, such as illness associated with the consumption of pet food or pet food product defects.
