Lawmakers in South Dakota have passed a resolution seeking the reinstatement of USDA inspection of horse processing plants. A federal appeals court ceased private-pay funding for horsemeat inspections in 2007, effectively shutting down processing plants in Illinois and Texas.
SCR 4 asks Congress to reinstate and fully fund the USDA’s horse slaughter and processing facilities inspection program.
The resolution also urges Congress to defeat HR503/SB 727, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, which prohibits the transport of horses to processing plants in Mexico and Canada. Read More…
