The horse attended the 2025 WPRA World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco, Texas on November 5-9, 2025. TAHC staff are working closely with event coordinators, equine owners, and veterinarians to respond to the outbreak, take measures to protect equine, and prevent the further spread of the virus. Additional participants of this event have been notified by the TAHC and are currently being monitored under hold orders.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Tennessee’s state veterinarian is encouraging horse owners to get their horses vaccinated for Potomac Horse Fever after four cases were confirmed across the state, including in Northeast Tennessee. The Department of Agriculture says cases have been confirmed in four horses in Hawkins, Robertson, Sullivan, and Wilson counties. The horse in Wilson County had to be euthanized. On July 8, 2021, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) Veterinary Services (VS) reported active cases of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE) in Mexico. At this time, the confirmations are not close to the Texas-Mexico border. However, due to abundant rainfall across the state, mosquito activity is expected to increase which could facilitate the transport of this disease across Mexico into the United States.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture has announced that vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has now been confirmed in 10 counties in Kansas. KDA’s Division of Animal Health continues to respond to the outbreak that began in south central Kansas in mid-June and has now expanded its reach to the north and east. More than 60 premises have tested positive for VSV in Butler, Chase, Cowley, Greenwood, Marion, Miami, Montgomery, Morris, Sedgwick and Sumner counties. In addition, KDA is awaiting laboratory results from symptomatic animals in other counties as the outbreak continues to spread. All premises with confirmed cases
Cattle rarely contract rabies, but some states have reported cases this year—including one each in Minnesota and Texas, and two in Oklahoma. The cases in Oklahoma are concerning, according to the Oklahoma Department of Health, as the state had already confirmed 20 cases of rabies by early June, nearly equaling the total 24 cases the state confirmed in 2019. Nationwide, a total of 33 rabid cattle were reported in 2018, representing a 8.3% decrease from 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These are the most recent figures, to date, from the CDC.

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at Texas A&M University has started processing samples for COVID-19 tests for local health care providers, and the lab’s director, veterinarian Bruce Akey, says the lab has more capacity to help. The lab runs tens of thousands of animal tests each year that are similar to COVID-19 tests, but the lab would need a regulatory waiver to run the tests for humans. The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed the virus as the New Jersey serotype. These confirmations mark the first cases of VSV in Texas this year. The horses were tested after the
