EIA is an incurable, infectious disease caused by a virus that can affect horses, donkeys, asses and other equine species.
West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in Kansas and in the United States. It causes severe neurological disease in horses.
The horse, a ten-year-old Saddlebred gelding, was from Wythe County and died as a result of the disease.
In a statement Kentucky Equine Programs manager E.S. “Rusty” Ford said the case was confirmed June 13.

Austin, TX – Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) officials released the premises quarantined for Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic disease linked to Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), in Denton County on March 15, 2017. There are no other reported EHM cases in Texas. The barrel racing horse had shown signs of ataxia, loss of coordination of the muscles, and other neurologic signs consistent with EHM when evaluated by a local veterinarian. Prior to confirmation, the positive horse attended barrel racing events at the Northside Arena in Fort Worth, TX on February 14 and NRS Arena in Decatur,
The virus is not contagious to people, but it is easily transmitted to other horses through equine fecal matter and saliva

AUSTIN, TX – Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic disease linked to Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), in a Denton County barrel racing horse on February 21, 2017. The horse showed signs of ataxia, loss of coordination of the muscles, and other neurologic signs consistent with EHM when evaluated by a local veterinarian. The premises is under quarantine and TAHC staff is working closely with the owner and veterinarian to implement testing protocols and biosecurity measures. Prior to confirmation, the positive horse attended barrel racing events at the NRS Arena in Decatur,
Testing was conducted after a mare previously stabled at Turfway Park tested positive for the wild strain of EHV-1 late last week

The Texas Animal Health Commission(TAHC) was notified by The United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) of the confirmed presence of New World screwworm in a stray dog that was found in Homestead, Florida. This is the first time screwworms have been found on Florida’s mainland in decades. The screwworm eradication program has been underway in Florida since October 2016. The USDA, Florida Department of Agriculture and partnering agencies will continue to modify the eradication program as needed in order to eradicate the New World screwworm. Equine rabies is a feared and fatal disease, but there are ways horse owners can reduce the risk of their animals becoming infected
The release said equine piroplasmosis is a blood parasite that affects horses. It can be transmitted through infected ticks but is more commonly spread by blood and blood products through shared needles or syringes, or improperly cleaned and disinfected dental, tattoo, surgical or blood product equipment.
EEE kills up to 90 percent of the horses infected. The horse in Madison County did not survive. Although there is no vaccine for humans, the EEE vaccine for horses is particularly effective to protect horses against the virus.
This is the eighth equine EEE statewide in 2016 and the second for Osceola County, the EDCC reported.
The control strategy involved stringent movement restrictions and disease surveillance, with emergency post-outbreak vaccination strategies.

Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a mare at a breeding farm in Cooke County, Texas on May 24. The affected farm was placed under quarantine and restricted from moving animals and semen. Since the original confirmed EHM positive horse, six additional horses on the premises have tested positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. One of the test positive horses exhibited neurologic signs consistent with EHM, bringing the total number of EHM cases at this facility to two. TAHC staff works closely with the facility management and veterinarian to implement testing
