BY JIM JENNINGS
America’s Horse, June 25, 2007- Jim Jennings’ “Best Remudas” immortalizes the building blocks of the American West – the working ranch horse – and at the 2007 Independent Publisher Awards, this handsome new coffee table book was awarded a bronze medal for Outstanding Book of the Year in the category of Best Corporate Branding Book. “Best Remudas” was among 2,690 national entries competing in 12 categories at this year’s contest.
A remuda is a group of working horses bred for the ranch specifically to work and pen cattle. In his book, Jennings, executive director of publications for the American Quarter Horse Association, features photographs and expressive text for 15 ranches and the horses these operations rely on for everyday tasks.
AQHA has been recognizing outstanding ranches for their hard work in raising American Quarter Horses since 1992. Some of the featured ranches include Babbitt Ranches of Arizona, Lacey Livestock Company of California and Douglas Lake Cattle Company of British Columbia. This award is given by AQHA and Bayer Animal Health, and it was created to honor the contributions that ranch horses have made to evolve today’s American Quarter Horse, an important tool of America’s western frontier.
Jennings is the author and photographer of the award-winning book catering to horse-lovers, cowboys and western enthusiasts. A resident of Amarillo, Texas, Jennings has been writing about and photographing American Quarter Horses for more than 35 years.
Many people today still romanticize about the great American West, including the cowboys, horses and cattle drives that epitomize western movies. Few people, however, realize that for many this is a way of life, and “Best Remudas” recognizes and honors those that excel in this timeless and traditional lifestyle.
