“Texas Flags” Ends at the National Cowgirl Museum

“Texas Flags” Ends at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on Sunday, February 12

FORT WORTH, Texas – Twenty-nine pieces of Texas history included in “Texas Flags” at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame will leave North Texas on Sunday, February 12, never to be seen collectively again. The flags will return to the private collections and repositories from which they came.

“Texas Flags” made its way to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on November 18, 2005 after making stops in Austin, El Paso and College Station. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame was the only North Texas venue chosen to display these rich fabrics of history.

Sponsored by the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University and Frost Bank, “Texas Flags” was curated by Dr. Robert Maberry, Jr. and includes several significant flags that represented Texas through its independence from Mexico, the Civil War and World War II. Each flag was carefully conserved as to ensure the original fabrics were not penetrated in any way to avoid accelerating their deterioration.

“Many of these flags will never be exhibited again because they are too fragile,” Maberry says. “Light and moisture are the enemies. After this exhibit, the flags will be kept in dark, moisture controlled spaces to preserve them. In 50 to 100 years, these flags will be gone no matter what we do.”

“Texas Flags” on display at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame will end on Sunday, February 12. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is the last stop on its state-wide tour and the flags will not be seen together again.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame honors and documents the lives of women who have distinguished themselves while exemplifying the pioneer spirit of the American West. Located at 1720 Gendy Street in Fort Worth’s Cultural District, the museum includes interactive exhibit galleries, three theaters, a retail store and a grand rotunda housing the Hall of Fame. The museum is open seven days a week – 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
