The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, August 1, 2007 – If you’re going to be part of this year’s AQHYA Championship Experience at Los Alamitos, you’re going to have to be quick like an American Quarter Horse and fill out an application.
The 2007 AQHYA Championship Experience will coincide with the Bank of America Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos in southern California October 31-November 3. Participants will receive an all-expense paid trip to California, get to experience all aspects of American Quarter Horse racing and compete for scholarships.
Youth must be at least 14 years old as of January 1, 2007, and a member of the American Quarter Horse Youth Association to apply. No prior racing experience is required. Completed applications are due August 15, 2007. So don’t get left standing in the starting gate, fill out that application.
Championship Experience participants attend the races and get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of racing. Youth are assigned to barns where a professional racehorse trainer mentors them and gives the youth hands-on experience with racehorses. The University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program’s Wendy Davis guides the participants through the racing labyrinth with a short course of racing 101.
The acquired racing knowledge can translate into money for college, too. Completing a notebook, researching racehorses and displaying skills in a barn test can mean money for college as participants vie for a share of scholarships worth $19,000.
