Program targets AQHA Professionals, Families and Employees
The American Quarter Horse Journal, October 20, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association announces an exciting partnership with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center for this year’s AQHA World Championship Show. Together they are providing free health screenings on November 15 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Travel & Transportation Building of the trade show. AQHA is encouraging all Professional Horsemen and Horsewomen, their families and employees to take a few minutes from their hectic schedules to learn more about their health.
“We have the greatest professionals anywhere,” said AQHA Executive Director of Shows and Regional Services Cam Foreman. “For many, their schedules are so busy they often neglect the very important point of staying healthy and getting routine exams. By providing this service during the World Show, we’re hoping our professionals, their family members and employees will visit the free screening center and take the first steps toward detection and prevention.”
At the World Show – the climax of the show season – all attention is focused on the equine athletes. Between training, riding, grooming and prepping for competition, many exhibitors rarely take a minute for themselves.
AQHA Professional Horsemen and Horsewomen are dedicated to the health and well-being of their American Quarter Horses. This year AQHA hopes they’ll dedicate a few minutes to their own health, courtesy of the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
A team of medical professionals including doctors and nurses will be available for screenings and to answer health questions on Saturday, November 15 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Travel & Transportation Building at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. They will be located next to the AQHA booth in the Trade Show. This service is confidential and free of charge.
Each health assessment includes a cholesterol test, BMI assessment, glucose testing, swish and spit oral cavity cancer screen, and information on risk assessments and mammography. All Oklahomaresidents are eligible for a free mammogram and colonoscopy that can be scheduled through OUHSC.
“Under the right circumstances and with the right tests, screening can save lives,” said Tracie Anderson, MS with OUHSC. “For that reason, AQHA and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center want Professional Horsemen and Horsewomen to take 20 minutes at the World Show and receive a confidential health check to assess their risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes or other general health issues.”
AQHA is concerned about the health and well-being of its membership and thanks the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center for its support in raising health awareness among AQHA members. Last year, AQHA teamed with OUHSC to bring Saddle Up For Life, an event that recognized cancer survivors and raised money for cancer care. This year, Saddle Up For Life will be held on Friday, November 14.
