AQHA Performance Champion and 2004 AQHA All-Around High-Point Junior Horse One Hot Jose died on August 11 from complications following colic surgery at the veterinary hospital at Central University De Rio Preto in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 1999 dun stallion, owned by Joe and Dee Lynn Braman of JB Quarter Horses in Refugio, Texas, had been standing at the LeLu Ranch in Novo Horizonte, Sao Paulo, Brazil, since July 2010.
Bred by leading AQHA exhibitor Bobby Lewis of Overbrook, Okla., One Hot Jose was by Hollywood Heat out of Uno Holly, by Jose Uno. Under Lewis’s guidance, the stallion was extremely successful in the show pen, being one of the only stallions to reach 1,000 performance points in less than three years of showing. At the pro rodeos, One Hot Jose was ridden by multiple National Finals Rodeo qualifier Tyler Magnus and was seen often on Magnus’s RFD-TV program, The Roping Show.
Some of One Hot Jose’s show accomplishments include a 2003 Reserve World Championship in Junior Heading; yearend high-point titles in Open Tie Down, Senior Tie Down, Junior Tie Down and Junior Heading; world show qualifications in heading, heeling, tie down, working cow horse as well as aged halter stallions; and AQHA World Show and Incentive Fund earnings of $35,017.
As a sire, One Hot Jose was just coming into his own. With only 23 foals, performance age (at least 4 years of age), One Hot Jose had three AQHA open performance register of merit earners from four to show including Joses Jazzy Cat, a superior heeling horse with $5,308 in AQHA World Show and Incentive Fund earnings. In the barrel racing arena, his two futurity horses earned $13,901—BFA World Futurity finalist and open 1D money earner Mr JB High On Jose ($11,009) and Miss JB 0614 ($2,892).
