Amarillo, Texas, September 2, 2005 – The American Quarter Horse Association today announced that it is teaming with the American Horse Council Foundation to raise funds to help horses and their owners who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The American Horse Council Foundation is currently accepting donations to assist in the states which were affected by this natural disaster, particularly Louisiana and Mississippi. The current situation in these states is dire, and people and their horses are in great need of help.
The proceeds of the AHC Hurricane Relief fund will assist horse owners and their horses. The American Horse Council Foundation, under the leadership of its Board, will determine where the funds will best be utilized to help these people and animals in need.
“The kindness of AQHA members is unsurpassed,†said AQHA President Frank Howell. “For those who want to help horses and their owners in the affected region by making a financial donation, the best way is through the American Horse Council Foundation. The Horse Council serves all breeds of horses and their owners and is doing a great service to the industry by establishing this fund.â€
Already, the American Quarter Horse Association has established an emergency relief network comprising AQHA members in dozens of states who are set to accept refugee horses, provide transportation to help move horses out of ravaged areas, provide veterinary services or assist with rescue operations. In less than 24 hours, more than 150 AQHA members from as far away as California and Idaho have agreed to help. In some instances, AQHA members have agreed to travel unlimited miles and take in as many as 20 refugee horses if needed.
“Our primary concern is for the health and well-being all people and animals whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina,†Howell said.
The American Horse Council Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. Contributions to it are tax-deductible as charitable contributions.
