Fourteen-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Ricky Canton broke the world tie-down roping record on Thursday, July 28, during the second round of the Strathmore (Alberta) Stampede. Canton was aboard the American Quarter Horse Hesa Rowdy Berry, owned by Houston Hutto of Del Rio, Texas.
Canton, who turns 40 in September, stopped the clock in 6.3 seconds during slack. The previous record was 6.5 seconds, held jointly by five-time world champion Cody Ohl at the 2003 Wrangler NFR and Clint Robinson last year in Amarillo, Texas.
Canton roped and tied a black and white spotted calf, using three swings and a wrap and hooey, according to reports. The previous fastest time by Canton, who lives in Navasota, Texas, was 6.9 seconds.
Hesa Rowdy Berry is a 1988 sorrel gelding by Iron Bird out of the John Berry mare Path Of Glory. Hesa Rowdy Berry was bred by William McGlothern of New Waverly, Texas.
