Amarillo, Texas, February 7, 2006 — The American Quarter Horse Foundation proudly announces that Dr. John Yost of Hastings, Nebraska, has been honored with the prestigious 2005 Merle Wood Humanitarian of the Year award.
The Merle Wood Humanitarian of the Year award annually recognizes an individual who exemplifies humanitarian qualities.
Among his many contributions to the industry, Yost is well known for his charity toward therapeutic riding. He co-founded and assists at the Saddle-Up Handicapped Riding Club in Hastings.
Yost, a retired orthopedic surgeon, breeds champion racing American Quarter Horses and is past president of the Quarter Horse Association of Nebraska. He generously donates time to support the Rural Ranchers 4-H Club and other equine-related organizations throughout Nebraska. Yost is an AQHA Honorary Vice President and serves on the Foundation Committee and Foundation Circle.
Yost and his late wife, June, have four children: Susan, John G., Jill Ann and Nancy Ann.
The Humanitarian award will be presented to Yost Sunday, March 5 during the AQHA Convention in Seattle. Along with a video presentation representing Yost’s commitment to service and the equine industry, Yost will be presented with a commemorative bronze bust of an American Quarter Horse, designed and generously donated by renowned sculptor Marrita McMillian of Gainesville, Texas.
The late Merle Wood, for whom the award is named, was an exemplary humanitarian. Within the industry and his community, he was an impressive businessman and civic leader. He worked to promote AQHA and the breed, and he influenced hundreds of young people to reach their industry and career goals.
