The head of the National Western Stock Show expressed sympathy Friday for those sickened by an E. coli outbreak that may be linked to the event but said visitors also must take responsibility for their hygiene.
President and CEO Pat Grant said if the E. coli bacteria that so far has sickened at least 12 people – mostly children – turns out to have originated at the stock show, it will be the first time that’s happened in 103 years.
“Our heart goes out to everybody who has become ill,” Grant said. “But the origin is not known. It has not been determined it is the National Western Stock Show.”
Grant also said people have an obligation to take care of personal hygiene at the stock show, at school and at home.
