LEXINGTON, KY — August 1, 2007 — Anthony M. Alonso has been chronicling the Thoroughbred scene since the 1970s with his masterful portraits of champion racehorses and their rousing battles on the track. The New York City native also is known for his evocative scenes of racetrack life — the moody mornings at Saratoga, the quiet toil of grooms, the slow hours until post time.

The Fine Art of Anthony M. Alonso showcases the artist’s mastery of his venue with more than 150 original oil paintings. The book, which represents the first compilation of his work, features portraits of stars such as Secretariat, Ruffian, Kelso, and Barbaro, as well as racing’s finest riders and trainers. The stretch run of the memorable 1997 Belmont Stakes, Cigar galloping home in isolated splendor, and Seattle Slew racing only the wind are among the fine action scenes included.

Alonso attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan and later the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. After a stint in the Army Air Force during the Korean War, during which he worked as a “technical illustrator,” Alonso began a career in advertising. He received his first commission as a painter in the early 1970s. The artwork was for racehorse trainer Allen Jerkens. Alonso delivered the painting to Jerkens’ barn at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., and became intrigued by the horse-racing scene.

Alonso’s original paintings are on display in public collections at Arlington, Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, Laurel, Santa Anita, and Woodbine racetracks, The Jockey Club in Lexington, Kentucky, and the National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs. Many prominent horsemen and horsewomen have commissioned Alonso to paint portraits of their beloved Thoroughbreds, and his work can also be found in private collections around the world.

Anthony Alonso and his wife, Mary, live in Stuart, Florida.

Praise for Anthony M. Alonso:

“No one ever captured the racing scene better than Tony Alonso.”
