Holly Hill Transport gives back to the Horses Three Ex-Racehorses’ Lives Saved

Loxahatchee, FL — March 20, 2010 — “I wanted to make a deposit in our karma bank,” were the words that Charlie from Holly Hill Transport used when he called Pure Thoughts, offering free transport for two Thoroughbred mares saved from going to slaughter. It probably ended up being a larger deposit than they had expected as the horses came down at different times.  New Hampshire to Loxahatchee Florida is a long haul. Charlie had heard about the horses from his mother who saw it through Phelps Media Group.
“Words will never be able to describe how grateful we are to Holly Hill Transport,” said PTHR co-founder Jennifer Swanson.  “When going into any rescue mission there are always unexpected variables, but this situation was financially draining to us.  In the end, Heaven’s Host expenses were $5800, Ilithyia was $3750 and Derby Trefaire was $2275. At no time did we expect the expenses to come close to this, but we made a commitment to the horses. Both Ilithyia and Heavens Host originated in Florida.  Their original coggins was issued in Florida in January of 2010 and by March 16, 2010 they were heading for slaughter.  Derby Trefaire was also an ex-racehorse who had been placed through another program but ended up in trouble; it just did not seem right to say we would only take the two and leave him.”
Volunteers from New England Equine Rescue stepped forward to help as well.  Derby Trefraire, Ilithyia and Heavens Horse were pulled to safety, but due to illness all three horses needed to go directly to New England Equine Clinic. Derby Trefaire stayed in isolation for a week but the circumstances were much different for the two mares.  They were very ill and not being treated. Ilithyia had to spend 20 days in isolation at the clinic and Heavens Host was in isolation for over 40 days, and neither horse could be released until the bloodwork came back negative.
Holly Hill Transport hauled both Heaven’s Host and Ilithyia down to Florida in their beautiful coach. It was wonderful to see these two girls, who were about to be sent to slaughter, arrive in such a gorgeous trailer.  The people of Holly Hill Transport could not have been nicer to us and to the horses.  They treated the mares like they were million dollar show horses. They really went out of their way to give back to the horses.
We highly recommend for your next transport to call Holly Hill Transport at (508) 428-8303 or visit their website at  www.hollyhilltransport.com and Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HollyHillTransport
Derby Trefaire has been adopted and is in a wonderful home with many people who love him with kids all around. Ilithyia and Heaven’s Host are at Pure Thoughts’ Florida Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement facility in Loxahatchee, Florida.  They are already well into their retraining and are ready to find their forever home.
This rescue was a financial hit to Pure Thoughts.  If you would like to help, you can donate or please consider adopting one of the many horses available at the Pure Thoughts Horse & Foal Rescue. To see updated pictures of Derby Trefaire, Ilithyia and Heavens Host you can visit www.PTHR.org.
