KANSAS CITY, MO — he Humane Society says that it could be months before dozens of neglected horses rescued from a northwest Missouri farm find new homes, but with colder weather approaching, some experts say that the problem of neglected or abandoned horses could get a lot worse.
According to Tina Weidmaier of Changing Leads Equine Rescue, it costs around $2,400 a year to keep a healthy horse. But when the weather turns colder, those expenses often compete with horse owner’s seasonal expenses.
The U.S. Humane Society says that it’s too difficult to track horse neglect cases, saying that many times private organizations step in to help the animals and do not report their findings.
That could mean more area shelters becoming crowded with horses like the ones rescued from the Andrew County farm last week, where authorities found 27 horses living in poor conditions, with another six horses already dead. Another horse had to be euthanized on the spot. Read more…
