Michigans horse industry quietly relieved that slaughter option may return

A small appropriations bill passed by Congress this month will allow slaughter houses to resume killing horses for export to countries where people eat horse meat — a move that has strong support among most members of the horse industry, said Val Vail-Shirey, executive director of Michigan Equine Partnership in Lansing.

The shut-down of the U.S. horse slaughter houses that resulted when, back in 2006, funding for their inspection was eliminated,  was probably done with the best of intentions, Vail-Shirey said. READ MORE…
