Missouri Educates Youths with Junior Master Horseman Books

America’s Horse, June 6, 2007 – The University of Missouri recently purchased 150 Junior Master Horseman books to use for educating youths in their state. The university sent copies to all the county extension offices as a resource for the 4-H horse project.

“The curriculum is excellent and geared to be nonbreed specific,” said Ben Gallup, state 4-H youth development specialist in Missouri. “It has a wealth of quality subject matter information.”

In addition to having the books available at all their county extension offices, the Missouri extension department also gave a copy of the JMH book to the top 10 junior and senior high individual winners at their state horse judging contest in March.

“We are excited to see the Missouri county extension offices implementing the Junior Master Horseman program,” said AQHA President Frank Merrill. “We hope to see more states follow their lead and use this educational book as a resource for their youth.”

Junior Master Horseman is a new horse curriculum developed by the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Youth Horse Council. It is a multi-level, experience-based curriculum that teaches young people about horses by using a book and interactive Web site. The Level 1 book has been out for more than a year, and the Level 2 book will be available soon.
