March 27, 2009 – The state of North Dakota is coordinating animal evacuation and sheltering efforts and is not currently asking for volunteers to assist in areas affected by record flooding, according to Dr. Deidre Qual, DVM, MPH, MS Dipl ACVPM, Emergency Program Coordinator and Assistant State Veterinarian for the North Dakota State Board of Animal Health and the state Department of Agriculture.
An Emergency Management Assistance Compact request, which allows for the sharing of resources from state to state, has been submitted by North Dakota officials requesting the Minnesota Medical Reserve Corps Veterinary Unit to assist in veterinary medical care of evacuated animals at the Valley City shelter. The AVMA VMAT has not been requested or deployed at this time and is prepared to deploy on short notice.
