Amarillo, Texas, December 16, 2008 – The qualifying season for the 2009 American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show is under way, and the recommendations for qualifying points have been approved.
AQHA’s in-house World Show Committee uses a formula to determine the qualifying points. The committee then presents the recommendations to the AQHA Executive Committee for approval.
Qualifying points for the 2009 World Show will remain the same as in 2008, except for the junior heading, junior heeling, senior trail, ranch sorting and amateur ranch sorting classes. Junior heading and heeling and senior trail will increase by one point each, and open and amateur ranch sorting will increase by two points each.
Another notable change to the 2009 World Show is that there will no longer be a green working hunter class. Instead, AQHA will offer a progressive working hunter class with slightly higher fences.
Through the generosity of Bank of America, FedEx and other AQHA corporate partners, $600,000 of added money was added to the 2008 World Show purses. More than 3,400 entries competed for more than $2.7 million at the 2008 World Show and the show contributed an estimated $31.8 million to the Oklahoma City-area economy. Ranch sorting was the largest class for amateur and open competitions. There were 114 horses competing on 57 teams in amateur ranch sorting, and 150 horses on 75 teams competed for their share of the $83,535 purse in open ranch sorting. Horses in senior cutting competed for their share of $93,483, the largest purse of the show.
For the first time in World Show history, Most Valuable Horses were named in six open categories. These versatile horses rewarded their owners with a $5,000 bonus after being named Most Valuable Horse. By planning now, your horse could reward you with some extra cash in 2009.
