Rabies cases are on the rise in county

The number of rabies cases is up in Lapeer County and health officials are urging pet owners to get their animals vaccinated.

According to Walt Rodabaugh, chief of the Lapeer County Animal Shelter, three positive cases of rabies have been reported this year. All three incidents involved bats. Rodabaugh stressed vaccines as a form of rabies prevention.

“Is there an increase in cases of rabies? Yes,” he said. “Those three bats were in a home with animals and people. Our officers are always on the lookout for rabies.”
